Phinney, Eleanor H. (Sanburn)
Phinney, Eleanor H. (Sanburn), 84 of Randolph, NH and Yarmouthport, MA, died Monday Nov. 14 on Cape Cod. She was the wife of the Reverend Frederick W. Phinney for 58 years.
Born in Springfield, MA on Oct. 21, 1921, Mrs. Phinney was the daughter of Justus C. and Marion T. (Hale) Sanburn. She was educated at the MacDuffie School in Springfield, the Emma Willard School in Troy, NY and at Wellesley College in Wellesley. She also did architectural post graduate studies at the Harvard School of Design in Cambridge. She was accomplished in oil painting and watercolor sketches and studied under the Chicago artist, Carl Schultz.
During World War II, Mrs. Phinney worked at the Radiation Laboratory at MIT in Cambridge in projects related to the war effort. After the war in 1947, she married and raised her family. She lived in Waterbury, CT, Brookline and Beverly Farms, MA, Lake Forest, IL, East Africa, Rome, Italy and finally, Randolph, NH. She was a winter resident of Yarmouthport.
An avid traveler, Mrs. Phinney traveled extensively with her husband and family to Africa, Asia, the Middle East, the United Kingdom and Europe.
Mrs. Phinney was an accomplished tennis player from childhood, played top-notch tennis until the age of 70, was an artist and athlete, loved the mountains, the sea, and the beauty of nature. She supported environmental efforts, especially the Mount Washington Observatory and the Randolph Mountain Club.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Phinney is survived by three sons, Benjamin S. of Milton, MA, Frederick W. Jr., of Yarmouthport, MA, and John F., of Basking Ridge, NJ; three daughters, Joanna H. of Washington, DC, Martha H. of Tucson, AZ and Harriet M. of Seattle, WA; a brother, Willis H. Sanburn II of Honolulu, HI; ten grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A Graveside Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday Nov. 19 at Woodside Cemetery, Summer St., Yarmouthport, MA.
