Heuss, Mary Clare(White)
Heuss, Mary Clare(White), of South Yarmouth died on Sunday, June 1st of heart failure. She was the beloved wife of Rev. William B. Heuss, rector of Saint David’s Episcopal Church of South Yarmouth.
Clare was born on October 4, 1944 in Reedsburg, Wisconsin, the youngest daughter of the late Carroll and Lillian White. She is survived by her sister,
Betty Lou (Mrs. Roy Remington) and many nephews, nieces and cousins.
At age 13, Clare entered the convent school of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in LaCrosse, Wisconsin and graduated from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. She left the convent in 1968 to follow a different path which led her to pursue a masters degree at Weston School of Theology in Cambridge, MA, where she met her future husband, Bill. They were married in 1976. Six months later, she was hired by Boston College High School in Dorchester, MA and was the first lay woman to teach religion at that Jesuit school.
In 1996, Clare retired and moved to Cape Cod with her husband. She particularly enjoyed bringing the sacraments to Catholic patients at Cape Cod Hospital and serving as a Eucharistic minister at Saint Pius X Church. Clare was truly ecumenical, participating with Bill in activities at St. David’s Church, as well as at Trinity Church on Martha’s Vineyard, where he took services and they vacationed every summer. She was modest by nature but people were always struck by her flair in the stylish clothes she wore. Clare loved watching movies, concocting recipes and reading. She had a particular passion for the lives of the saints, especially St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi, St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Theresa of Avila. She was a person of prayer with a huge heart - a loving wife and a devoted friend. She will be greatly missed.
Friends and relatives are invited to call at the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth on Friday, June 6 from 6-8 P.M.. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Satuday, June 7 at 10:30 A.M. in Saint Pius X Church, Station Ave., South Yarmouth, MA . Burial will be private.
