Swanson, Richard “Dick” Theodore
Swanson, Richard “Dick” Theodore , ,of South Dennis, passed away peacefully at Eagle Pond Rehabilitation and Living Center, where he had been a resident since the end of March, 2011. Dick was a devoted husband and father and is survived by his wife, Catherine (Neil) Swanson, daughter Amy (Swanson) West, and granddaughter, Alyson West. Another daughter, Martha Andrea Swanson, predeceased him.
Dick was born in 1931 in Mount Vernon, New York, son of Walter and Marion Swanson. He was a carpenter, in business with his father, working in the Bronxville, Eastchester, Scarsdale area of lower Westchester County. Together they built the family summer home at Candlewood Lake in New Milford, Connecticut.
He was a member of the New York State National Guard, 42nd Military Police Company of the famous Rainbow Division, from 1948 to 1957. Here on the Cape, he served on the Dennis Veterans’ Graves committee.
He was a gifted artist, painting reproductions of the great masters, Rembrandt, Vermeer, and others. He was a talented wood carver, specializing in waterfowl, and his decoys have won blue ribbons and honorable mentions at shows on Long Island. He loved working with wood and also made furniture and game boards.
He enjoyed antique shopping, and was most interested in collecting antique decoys, toys and games, advertising signs, lamps and lighting fixtures, New York World’s Fair items, and World War II memorabilia. He was a sportsman and outdoorsman and a member of the Cape Cod Fish and Game Club. He enjoyed gardening, golf, boating, fishing, hunting, and target shooting, and generally loved being in the outdoors. Earlier in his life he took up archery and made and fletched his own arrows. He also enjoyed carving the “checkered” patterns on his pistol and rifle stocks. He was a true handyman and could do anything around the house and almost anything around a car.
A memorial service will be held at a future date at Northside United Methodist Church, 701 Airline Road, Brewster, MA. If desired, and In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice or to Northside UMC
