Richard D. Hawley passed away at home with family by his side on January 18, 2025, after a long period of declining health. Born on December 17,1950 in the New York Finger Lakes Region, Rich grew up in the village of Skaneateles where he graduated from Skaneateles High School. He received his Associates Degree from SUNY Morrisville in 1971 and his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from SUNY Oswego in 1973.

Rich was employed in the Finance Department of R. E. Deitz company in Syracuse, NY for a dozen years before becoming Comptroller for Thermopatch, Inc. in Syracuse until his retirement in 2018. He then relocated to Cape Cod where he purchased a home in Marstons Mills, MA.

Rich loved being outdoors and as a teenager, became a terrific water and snow skier. Many weekends were spent at the family camp in the Adirondacks with Rich eventually becoming the owner and caretaker of the large log home and 17-acre waterfront property on Honnedaga Lake. The remote camp, reachable only by boat, was a cherished gathering spot for family and friends. Much of Richard’s later life was spent maintaining and upgrading the rustic camp with the additions of solar panels, hot water, fully functional bathrooms (an upgrade from the outhouse!), room additions, and a boathouse. He was helped by his sister and her husband who eventually became co-owners of the camp and then full owners when Rich moved to Cape Cod. Richard loved every minute of the planning process and the rewards his labor brought as he enjoyed the world of nature in a gorgeous setting.

Survivors include Rich’s sister, Georgia Sclafani (Salvatore) of Brooklyn, NY, brother Joseph Hawley (Sarah) of Yarmouth Port, MA, brother Benjamin Hawley of Spencerport, NY, as well as many nieces and nephews. Rich was predeceased by his parents William Gere Hawley, Jr. (Virginia) of Auburn, NY, his mother Jane Raleigh (Peter) of Fayetteville, NY, brother William Gere Hawley III of Auburn, NY, and brother Henry Hawley (Kathy) of Marcellus, NY.

Richard’s family would like to pass along their deepest gratitude to his wonderful caretakers – Kathy, Alicia, Paulene, Sandi, Angelina, Edna, and most especially, his primary caretaker, Laura Hart.

Memorial and burial will be held privately.
