Denise J. Doherty
Jul 18th, 2025
Denise J. (Hickey) Doherty, affectionately known as “Nisee,” passed away peacefully with family by her side on July 18th at the age of 79.
Born in the Bronx and raised in Hawthorne, NY she was the daughter of Joseph and Margaret Hickey. She attended Merrimack College before earning her Registered Nursing license from St. Lukes Hospital in New York City. Later she received a bachelor’s degree from Lesley College.
Denise had a special affection for children and learning. She helped thousands of babies enter the world as a labor and delivery nurse at Cape Cod Hospital for over thirty five years and then in midlife pursued a degree in education. She taught many years of CCD and served as a eucharistic minister at Our Lady of the Cape Church. She also enjoyed photography, gardening and knitting. She captured many special moments for friends and family with her photographs.
Nisee always enjoyed sharing time with her grandchildren and their cousins and friends. It didn’t matter whether it was building sandcastles or catching crabs at the beach, reading books to help waterlogged and sun-drenched toddlers go to sleep, reviewing the photographs taken during the day, or making frequent trips to Cobie’s for lunch and Smuggler’s for dessert.
Denise is survived by her husband, George, of 56 years and her sons Christopher and his wife, Colleen of Ridgewood, NJ, Michael of Dennis and Kevin Doherty and Jill Paulino of West Barnstable. She found great joy in her grandchildren Finn, Riese, and Declan. She is also survived by her sister Deidre Boecke of North Port, FL and her niece, Sara Nickols.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to McCarthy Care Center, VNA of Cape Cod Hospice, 73 Service Rd., East Sandwich, MA 02537.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Avenue, South Yarmouth, on Tuesday, July 22th from 5-7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Cape Church, 468 Stony Brook Road, Brewster, on Wednesday, July 23th at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be private.
