Lawrence "Larry" Russell Flattes

Aug 5th, 2025

Lawrence “Larry” Russell Flattes of Hyannis died August 5, 2025 at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio while awaiting a double lung transplant. Larry was diagnosed with severe pulmonary hypertension in 2017 and fought a long hard battle against the disease.

Born in Boston and raised in Dorchester, Larry was the son of Vivian  (Wynn) Flattes and James Leroy Flattes, Sr.
Larry was a graduate of Cathedral High School in Boston, where he played hockey and football. He had a love for sports and liked to rile people up by rooting for the opposing team!

Larry was well known around the Cape where he lived and worked over many years as a chef at the Breakfast Room in West Dennis, a manager at the old Christine’s in West Dennis, a bartender at Jason’s Tavern in Dennis ,where he met his wife, Kelley, and various other establishments along the way, most recently the Southside Cantina in Dennis Port.  He also gave back to the community by working as a volunteer at the Yarmouth and Dennis Police Departments. He was part of the “lunch club” at Seadog in Yarmouth and a fixture at Chapin’ Fish and Chip where you would likely find him enjoying a seafood platter and sipping his favorite drink, the Bermuda Triangle.

To know Larry was to love him. He was a proud Marine Corps veteran, a loving husband, brother, stepfather, grandfather, great grandfather and self-proclaimed “favorite” uncle and cousin. He had a caring heart and a great sense of humor. He loved magic tricks and a good joke. It brought him joy to make others laugh. He had a passion for cooking, hosting parties, feeding and entertaining his friends and family. During his illness he got hooked on cruising and had many great travel adventures with his wife. He fought hard, never gave up, never complained and lived his life to the fullest.

In addition to his parents, Larry was predeceased by his brother James Leroy Flattes, Jr.  He is survived by his wife, Kelley, his beloved dog Leila, his bonus children; Randy and Steven Kennedy, Aaron Steele and Brooke Miller-Steele ; and his bonus grandchildren, Casandra Salmoiraghi, Mila Salmoiraghi, great granddaughter, Jackson and Hunter Kennedy and most recently, June Miller-Steele, who he was so excited to meet but sadly did not get the opportunity. He is survived by his siblings Valerie, Richard, Julia and Ronald, sister-in-law Gail, aunts  Iris Oden and Roberta Stutzenberger and uncles  Riccardo and Bobby Flattes. He is also survived by his nieces, Shylicia, Ama, Dara and Breanna and his nephews, Johnathan, Ra-Shaun, Shawnell, Donnell and Shawn as well as many cousins, extended family “New Jersey Family” and many dear friends.

A graveside service, for those who wish to attend, will be held on August 19, 2025 at 11:30 A.M. at the Chandler Gray Cemetery in West Yarmouth, and of course since Larry loved a good party a Celebration of Life will follow at Chapin’s Fish and Chips, Lower County Road, Dennisport at 12:15  p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Tufts Medical Center Pulmonary Medicine Department.
