Walter H. Anderson

Walter H. Anderson, 88, of East Dennis, died Monday 25, 2015 at Cape Cod Hospital after a brief illness.

Andy was an accomplished athlete and coach. During his senior year at Waltham High School in 1943, he earned All-State Selection in football and hockey. Following high school graduation, the 17-year old enlisted in the Navy and saw action in the Pacific Theatre aboard the tugboat, USS Sakarissa, during World War II.

After the war he enrolled at Boston University where he excelled at football and hockey. His college highlight was the NCAA 1950 Hockey Championship in Colorado. He was selected to the first team All-America that year. Following his 1950 graduation from B.U., Anderson coached at Ayer High School, the University of Maine and B.U. before becoming head coach of football and hockey at Hingham High School in 1958. He was inducted into the Waltham High School Athletic Hall of Fame, the BU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1961 and the Hingham High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.

Once Andy retired in 1985, he enjoyed fishing on Cape Cod. “Sea Dog” had many a fish tale to tell including being hit by a whale 20 miles offshore of Chatham and catching several 600+ pound tuna in his 21-foot Boston Whaler.
Andy is survived by his wife of 66 years, Phyllis (LeShane) Anderson of East Dennis; daughters Judy Anderson of Belmont, Allyson Anderson-Sterling and her husband Rick of Mansfield, and the late Wendy J. Anderson; granddaughters Sara and Amy Sterling of Mansfield; a son Stephen Anderson of Sandwich and his family; and a niece and nephew and their families.
Family and friends are invited to visiting hours from 1 to 4 pm, on Sunday, May 31, 2015, to celebrate Andy’s life, at the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth. Burial will be private.
