Roger Jenks, 81, a kind and gentle man, passed peacefully in his sleep on August 27, 2021  after a long and gracious challenge with Alzheimer’s Disease.  He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce (O’Brien) Jenks, and his daughters and their partners, Susan Beard and Michael Tobey of Attleboro, MA, and Lauren and Alan Dews of Rochester, NH.  He is also survived by his grandchildren, Allison Beard, Christopher Beard, and Ryan Dews, as well as dozens of nieces and nephews.  He is predeceased by his parents, Albert and Myrtice Jenks and fourteen siblings. He will be missed by his young doodle dog, Sunny, who annoyed, provoked laughter, and most of all, comforted him.

Roger graduated from Norton High School and attended Northeastern University before serving aboard the USS Intrepid during his active U.S. Naval  duty from 1958 to 1963.  Most of Roger’s lifetime employment was as a branch manager with Fernandes Super Markets.  His last and most enjoyable employment was  assembling medical ports for Johnson & Johnson. During his last ten years in his Attleboro home studio, he taught woodcarving.  After retirement he was persuaded to share his masterful gift of bird carving by teaching related classes in his home in South Yarmouth.  Roger enjoyed volunteer work as a trail guide and presenting wood carving demonstrations at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History.

An avid reader, he was also a naturalist, enjoying kayaking, hiking, shellfishing, and birdwatching.  He took pride in and enjoyed the landscaped gardens he and Joyce created in South Yarmouth.  He was also a member of the Men’s Cooking Class at Yarmouth Senior Center. Formerly an active member of First Baptist Church in Attleboro, upon retirement he became a member at West Yarmouth Congregational Church, volunteering with the men’s fellowship and at the annual Pumpkin Patch.

Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service at West Yarmouth Congregational Church, 383 Route 28, West Yarmouth on Friday, September 10, 2021 at 11 A.M., followed by a collation.  Burial will be private.

Donations in his honor would be greatly appreciated to CCHC Dementia & Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Program, c/o Cape Cod Healthcare Foundation, P.O. Box 370, Hyannis, MA 02601.  These gifts will go directly to respite care for caregivers.  Donations would also be welcome in his honor to West Yarmouth Congregational Church.

I am going to miss Roger sooo very much. He was a kind and gentle man with a quick and witty sense of humor. It was such a blessing to be a Care Partner for him. We had many fun times doing word search puzzles, playing games, making dinner from time to time… and Roger really enjoyed making-his own pizza for lunch!! We had fun journaling all the different birds we saw in his yard, going for ice cream and touring the different beaches. Roger was always sooo very proud of how his beautiful his wife Joyce kept their yard. He recognized and really appreciated all her hard work and gardening talents taking care of and maintaining their property!! Roger will always hold a special place in my heart. He will be truly missed.

Dear Mr. Roger Jenks, Hello Mr. Roger! I know that you are watching us from heaven, but I want to share with you about your amazing family including your kids and grandkids. I moved from Cambodia in 2004, and I met your daughter Susan, granddaughter Ally, and grandson Chris in 2006 when I started my very first job at the ABACUS in Attleboro, MA. Your kids and your grandkids were so lovely, kind, caring, friendly, thoughtful, considerate, and cheering too. They taught me how to speak English, and they have inspired me to be happy and healthy. Their contagious smiles and their beautiful voice always made me wanting to listen to them and watch them all the time. Mr. Roger, you are the BEST Daddy! Mr. Roger, you are the BEST Grandpa ever! Please protect them from the above, and please know that their love for YOU is always with them in their beautiful hearts. Their love and their kindness are always in my heart. Thank you so much Mr. Roger for being an excellent Father, an amazing Grandfather, and of course, the BEST Husband! Much Love with Gratitude, Pagna Donlevy and the Family

Thank you Roger for all of the wonderful hours spent in your basement carving birds... for our trips to North Attleboro to Greg Dorrances' shop...and our lunches at Morin's restaurant. Most of all, thank you for the gift of your friendship.
