Janice May (Smith) Peterson of Hingham, formerly of West Yarmouth and Naples, FL, passed away on September 22, 2021 at the Pat Roche Hospice House in Hingham following a valiant battle with glioblastoma.  Janice celebrated her 82nd birthday on July 11, 2021 and her 61st wedding anniversary on September 10, 2021.

Janice was born in Worcester to Ernest A. and Agnes (King) Smith.  She graduated from Auburn High School and was a proud “Dandy.”  Described as “pert, popular, and pretty” in the yearbook, Janice lettered in basketball and field hockey and was a member of student council.  After graduating high school, Janice obtained an Associate’s Degree from Burdett College.  Janice worked as a medical assistant for a number of practices in Worcester and on Cape Cod, most recently for Dr. Amy Koff and Cranberry Square Dermatology.

A longtime summer resident of the Cape, Janice and her husband bought the Bayview Inn in West Yarmouth in 1994 and turned it into their full-time residence. Janice enjoyed working in her gardens and cherished her views of Hyannis Harbor.  She also enjoyed spending time at her condominium in Naples, walking for miles on Naples Beach, and enjoying a martini at the chickee bar with family and friends. Most of all, she loved being “Nana” to her grandchildren.

Janice leaves behind her devoted husband, Richard, of Hingham, her son, the Hon. Scott Peterson and his wife, Alison of Hingham, her daughter, Kathy Buffington of Naples, FL, and her daughter, Karin Fleming and her husband, Dennis of Lincoln, RI, eight exceptional grandchildren, Patrick, Graham, Ryan, Abigail, Emily, Lynsey, Cooper, and Jake, her brother, Thomas Smith and his wife, Jean of Truro, her brother-in-law, Gerald Lussier of Delmar, NY, and nine nieces and nephews.  Janice was predeceased by her sister Paula (Joyce) Lussier of Kingston, NY, her sister, Judith Standring of West Yarmouth, and her brother-in-law, Harold Standring.

Janice’s family would like to thank all of her caregivers at the MGH Center for Neuro-Oncology for the exceptional care she received following her diagnosis as well as the staff and volunteers at the Pat Roche Hospice House for making her final days as comfortable as possible.

Visiting hours will be held at Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Avenue, South Yarmouth on Friday, October 1, 2021 from 5:00 -8:00 P.M.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Saint Pius X Church, Station Avenue, South Yarmouth on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 11:00 A.M.  Burial at the Massachusetts National Cemetery will be private.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Janice’s memory to the MGH Center for Neuro-Oncology.
