 John J. Gonsalves Jr. of South Dennis passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer and dementia.  He was the beloved husband of Anita (Centeio) Gonsalves for 67 years.  John was born in South Dennis to the late John J. Sr. and Lena (Silva) Gonsalves.

 

 John graduated from Yarmouth High School with the class of 1950 where he was captain of the football team, earning the nickname “Newt”. Following high school John joined the U. S. Army and served in the Korean Conflict.  Upon returning from the U.S. Army, he started John Gonsalves and Son’s Masonry Company where he was a mason for over 60 years.

 

John had a very large sense of humor and loved to laugh. He loved his family and helping others. One of his accomplishments was opening a workshop for special needs children at the Nazareth School of Hyannis, where he was presented the Marian Medal Award in 1968.

 

In addition to his wife, Anita, John is survived by his sons, Jeffrey Gonsalves of Mashpee, Craig Gonsalves and his wife, Carol of South Dennis and Damien Gonsalves of West Hollywood, CA.  He was predeceased by his children, Maureen, Martin and Mary Joy Gonsalves, all of South Dennis.  Also surviving are five grandchildren and three great granddaughters:  Crystal Smith, her husband, Adam and their daughter, Astoria, Craig Gonsalves Jr., his wife, Dominique and their daughter, Olivia, Colleen Edwards, her husband, Tre and their daughter, Gabriella, and Martin and Brandon Gonsalves.

 

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, November 19, 2021 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Pius X Church, Station Ave., South Yarmouth, MA.  Interment will be private. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

 

Contributions in his memory may be made to Hospice of Cape Cod.

I love and miss you Grampa. Keep on laughing up there like you did with Astoria and I. Play football, eat Jag, smile, hug the kids and your Mom. Watch over us and let us know you are around. Till we meet again, I love you
