Ernest S. Evans 100 of Yarmouth Port died Monday January 17, 2022 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. He had been living with his loving family after a long and happy life.

He was the beloved husband of the late Helen V. Evans. They had been married for 73 years.

Born and raised in Norwalk, CT, Ernest was the son of the late Samuel and Ida (Latham) Evans. He graduated from Norwalk High School, where he had been both an athlete and a fine violinist who performed on the radio in the early days. He soon enlisted in the United Sates Navy and served 4 years in the US Submarine Service during World War II, primarily on the U.S.S. Hammerhead in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged in 1945 with the rank of Machinist Mate First Class.

He then continued with the mechanical and engineering knowledge that he gained in the Navy, at the Yale & Town Company for several years, and he ultimately worked with the International Business Machine Company until his retirement.

Ernest and Helen soon fell in love with Cape Cod, where they had often vacationed. They maintained a second home for many years before retiring to Yarmouth Port permanently 40 years ago. They enjoyed the Cape tremendously and took full advantage of this truly special place. They loved their neighborhood and neighbors and often entertained. Ernest maintained a connection with both his early sporting friends and his shipmates most of his life, although all had now predeceased him.

The wellbeing of his family and home were his primary concerns throughout his life. He is survived by a son, Attorney Kenneth M. Evans and his wife, Christina; two grandsons, Kenneth M. Evans II, and Attorney Eric H. Evans; and three great grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, Ernest was predeceased by his brother, Arnold Evans.

A Funeral Mass, celebrating Ernest’s life, will be held in St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis, at a later date.

Interment will be private in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
