BABINEAU – Leo E. 93 of West Dennis died peacefully at his home Friday December 4, 2015, with his family by his side.

He was the loving husband of Jeannette (Arsenault) Babineau. They had been married for 69 years.

Born in New Bedford, Leo was the son of the late Dominique R. and Elmira (LeBlanc) Babineau. He was raised and educated in Dennis and was a graduate of Yarmouth High School.

When he became of age, Leo enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was a decorated World War II veteran. He was honorably discharged as a torpedoman 2nd class. After his service to his country, Leo married his wife Jeannette and they have resided in West Dennis ever since.

Leo was instrumental in helping to establish the Dennis Rescue Squad and served as a volunteer firefighter for 39 years, retiring at the rank of Sr. Lieutenant. He also drove a snowplow for the town of Dennis for almost 50 years.

A carpenter by trade, Leo built and finished numerous houses on Cape Cod.

A devoted family man, Leo’s hobbies included golfing, and any kind of fishing that was in season. He was also an avid Red Sox fan.

In addition to his wife, Leo is survived by two sons, Donald and his wife, Trudy, and Paul and his wife, Michele all of South Dennis; two daughters, Patty Mendes and her husband, Ronnie of Marstons Mills, and Terry Babineau of Mashpee; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Leo was predeceased by his siblings, Ernest, Norman and Alfred Babineau, Doris Scott, Louise Bennedetto, Irene Ferro, and Yvonne Babineau.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday December 9 in Saint Pius X Church, Station Ave., South Yarmouth.

Interment will follow at 2 p.m. in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday December 8 in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth.
