Lawrence R. Holmes 78 of South Yarmouth passed away peacefully at his home Friday April 15, 2022, surrounded by his loving family.

He was the beloved husband of Kathleen (Boyce) Holmes.

Born in Barnstable, Larry was the son of the late Lawrence B. and Madeleine (Martin) Holmes. He graduated from Barnstable High School in 1961 and joined the U.S. Navy, where he served as a Boiler Technician onboard the USS Charles S. Sperry and participated in the Navy’s Cuban Missile Crisis Task Force.

Larry met his wife, Kathy, while they were both working at Cape & Vineyard Electric and later wed on September 12, 1970.

Larry retired from NSTAR after a life-long career of earning promotions, thoroughly understanding Cape Cod's electrical distribution and transmission systems, and working tirelessly to ensure the Cape's residents and businesses had reliable and resilient power year-round.

He also enjoyed a lifelong commitment to public service where he volunteered for nineteen years as a call firefighter with the Yarmouth Fire Department, eighteen years in Yarmouth’s Volunteer in Police Service Program, eighteen years as a Cape Cod Hospital Patient Transport volunteer, and many years of service to both his local homeowner’s association board and as a Town of Yarmouth Precinct Volunteer.

Given his uncanny wit, talent, and knack for connecting with people, Larry found joy in supporting, working, and attending his sons’ activities, teaching cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid, and keeping up on local politics and public safety topics. Larry had the gift of the gab, could make anyone feel at ease, and to know him was to love him.

Larry’s curiosity, along with his wife’s, drew them to travel across the United States and throughout the world, which included visits to see their children in Japan, Ireland, Mexico, Bahrain, Portugal, and Spain. His passion for family travel included sailing on cruise ships and exploring ports of call in exotic locations including Australia, New Zealand, Europe, South America, Alaska, Caribbean, and the Panama Canal. His interest and support to the U.S. Navy never waned as he jumped at the opportunity to experience a rare “Tiger Cruise” onboard the USS Enterprise during the aircraft carrier’s transatlantic voyage home.

In addition to his wife, Lawrence is survived by four sons, Capt. Robert L. (USN) and his wife, Sybil of Virginia Beach, VA, Ryan P. and his wife, Dee Dee Norton of South Yarmouth, Sean M. of Hyannis Port, and Brett E. and his partner, Ren Herring of Provincetown; four grandchildren, Kileigh, Gabriel, Elizabeth and Lauren; extended grandfather to Ana and Costa Norton; four brothers, Richard of Dennis, Thomas and Stephen both of Hyannis, and William of Chittenango, NY; a sister, Deborah Onnembo of Thornton, NH; and many nieces; nephews; and cousins.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday April 28 in St. Pius Tenth Church, Station Ave., South Yarmouth.

Interment will follow in Woodside Cemetery, Summer St., Yarmouth Port.

Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday April 27 in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth.

As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod, - Hospice, 255 Independence Drive, Hyannis, MA 02601.
