John H. Meagher, III, age 84, passed away on September 26, 2022 at Mill Hill Residence in South Yarmouth, Massachusetts after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

He is survived by his loving wife of forty-seven years, Suzanne Stryker Meagher, and son Sean C. Meagher and his wife Alexis of Marston Mills, son Luke A. Meagher, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, daughter, Regina M. Meagher, Rumford, Rhode Island, and grandson, Jackson A. Meagher.

John (known by family and old friends as Sean), was born to Judge John H. Meagher and Elizabeth McDermott Meagher in Worcester, Massachusetts. His brothers, Dermot (Renato Cellucci) of Provincetown, Massachusetts, Andrew [Denise and Drew] of Harwich, Massachusetts, Padric (Michael Guy) of Truro, Massachusetts, Timothy of Washington, D.C., and a sister, Mary E. of Jamestown, Rhode Island survive him.

Sean grew up in Worcester and graduated from St. John’s High School where he played varsity football his senior year. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Fairfield University in 1960, his Master’s degree from Assumption College in 1966, and his PhD in Medieval and Renaissance English Literature from Bowling Green State University in 1976. He taught English at Bunker Hill Community College in Charlestown, Massachusetts for over thirty-five years. During that time, he continued to pursue his interest in medieval studies and gave several invited presentations.

Sean and Suzanne raised their family in Northborough, Massachusetts and Rumford, Rhode Island. Sean was active as a volunteer for Rumford Little League, Providence Youth Hockey Association, Habitat for Humanity, and Greater Rhode Island Food Bank.

As a child Sean had summered on Cape Cod, and after retirement Sean and Suzanne moved to West Barnstable, and later to Yarmouth Port. Sean volunteered at the St. Francis food pantry in Hyannis for several years and was a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society. In Yarmouth, Sean volunteered at Bingo at St. Pius the X Church, and at the Habitat for Humanity Store.

In addition to being a kind and loving son, husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, Sean enjoyed sports (particularly football), music, reading and researching, and was a talented handyman.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Alzheimer’s Family Support Center of Cape Cod, 2095 Main Street, Brewster, MA 02631 or Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod, 411 Main Street, Suite 6, Yarmouth Port, MA 02675. The family would like to thank Broad Reach Hospice and Mill Hill Residence in West Yarmouth for the wonderful care they gave Sean.

Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, October 1, 2022 at St. Pius X Church, Station Ave, South Yarmouth. Interment will be private.
