Robert H. Smith of West Yarmouth, MA passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, October 2, 2022, with his family by his side.

Bob grew up in Harwich and started working at a very young age doing errands, delivering the newspaper, weeding and building cranberry boxes. He was a self-employed carpenter, painter, landscaper and handyman. Early in his career he taught himself to read architectural plans and build houses, including a hotel in Provincetown. He also helped cut the roads in at Riverbay Estates in Chatham.

He was a loving father and amazing friend. He found humor in everything and loved making people laugh. He had a quick wit and was very adept at twisting words and spoonerisms.

Bob had incredible energy, tenacity and was a competitive runner. He ran road races in many states and ran the Boston Marathon multiple times. He was a long-time member of the Cape Cod Athletic Club with whom he had so many cherished friends who called him “Smitty.” He also enjoyed walking, hiking, dancing, coin collecting and astronomy.

Pre-deceased by his parents Leo and Lottie (Chase) Smith, his brother Thomas Smith and former spouse Mary (Walker) Smith.

He is survived by his children - Laura Redding of Roanoke, VA, Loraine Killen and her husband Robert of W. Yarmouth and Cary Smith of San Francisco, CA.

Visitation will be held Saturday, October 29th from 2-4pm at Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Avenue, S. Yarmouth.

The family would like to thank Mass General Hospital and Beacon Hospice for their compassion and support.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to ALS.org - Massachusetts Chapter or Beacon Hospice by mailing a check made out to Amedisys Foundation and mailed to Beacon Hospice, 68 Center St., Suite 19, Hyannis, MA 02601.
