Erik Christopher Menyhart, 15, returned to his heavenly Father, way too soon, on January 7, 2023.

Erik was born on September 16, 2007 at Falmouth Hospital as the middle child of his beloved family. He loved exploring the world around him, and attended preschool at Building Blocks Child Care Center. During his elementary years at the former Barnstable Community Horace Mann Charter Public School, Erik attended Boskola, the Boston Hungarian School and the Hungarian Scouts Organization of New England, where he immersed himself from an early age in his Hungarian heritage, even noting at times of being homesick despite never having lived in his parents’ home country. Erik later attended Saint John Paul II School and was a career honor roll student, earning US Presidential All Honors recognition in 8th grade. He was involved in many clubs and activities, including Student Council with his younger sister, Lilly, and the National Junior Honor Society. He was hoping to become a Physicist like his Dad, but was also interested in engineering and computer science. He touched the lives of so many from young to old as a kind, respectful, polite and caring young boy.

Erik was a talented violinist and was the student of Dan Flonta, a master violinist, for 8 years. He was a long time member of the music community at the Cape Cod Conservatory and subsequently, Dan Flonta’s private studio where in addition to working on his solo pieces, he was a senior member of the Junior Chamber Orchestra. He was meticulous about perfecting his technique and inherently excellent clarity of tone. Erik also joined the Saint John Paul II String Ensemble in 5th grade and grew into a skilled mentor to his younger and less experienced musician peers. He was the recipient of the Cape Cod Conservatory Scholarship by audition and won first violin by audition in 2022 and 2023 in the Massachusetts Music Educators Association’s Junior Festival Symphony Orchestra.

Erik’s biggest passion in life was sailing. He started his sailing journey at his beloved Hyannis Yacht Club at the age of 5 and transitioned into single handed racing at the age of 8. He was a top sailor on the Optimist Race Team, where he later sailed with his younger sister, Lilly, and picked up double-handed C420 sailing in both skipper and crew positions, and single-handed Laser Radial sailing at the young age of 13. He started to spread his wings first in the Southern Massachusetts Sailing Association circuits, and by the age of 15 on a national and international level. He was an aspiring champion, his talent and skillset capturing the attention of many sailors and coveted sailing coaches, recently securing 3rd place in his category at his first international regatta. Erik was excited to be returning as a junior instructor at HYC in the summer, teaching Opti sailors the secrets of his trade. He also competed as a starting sailor from day one in 7th grade on the SJP2 Varsity Sailing team with his older sister Sophie, and helped his team earn a close 2nd spot in the Cape & Islands Team Racing Championship, as well as win the High School Figawi Crawford Cup two years in a row.

Erik loved to spend time on the water. When not sailing, he was cruising around in his Zodiac or was out boating and fishing on Nantucket Sound. He always out-fished his Dad, seamlessly docked the boat under any condition, and took on the impossible task of teaching his Dad how to sail. In addition to sailing, he enjoyed many other sports and pastime activities. He earned the highest swimmer recognition at HYC as Swimmer of the Year in 2021, but he also loved other sports such as soccer, basketball, lacrosse, golf, cross country and skiing. On the weekends, he tried his wings in the kitchen and was interested in learning new recipes from his biggest cheerleader, his Mom. Erik was also an active parishioner at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Barnstable as a reader, usher, acolyte and live stream operator, and took many opportunities to volunteer.

Erik was preceded in death by his grandmother, Magdolna Menyhart, and great grandparents: Anna Erdei (Reviczki), Peter Erdei, Maria Nagy (Fuleki), and Laszlo Nagy. He is survived by his beloved parents Gabor and Timea Menyhart, sisters Sophie and Lilly, grandparents Geza Daniel Menyhart and Ildiko Erdei, quasi-grandmother Maryellen Leonard, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and loving relatives.

A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 20, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Christ the King Parish, 5 Job's Fishing Rd., Mashpee, MA, followed by a private burial.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Erik Menyhart Memorial Scholarship Fund supporting aspiring youth violinists and sailors.

Timea, there is no way to comprehend the agony that has come upon you and your family. We can only hope that you will and do find comfort and support in family, friends, church and above all in God’s tender love. Erik’s funeral was a great moment of comfort and courage this afternoon, and I hope it brought you some measure of comfort and relief of pain. Libby’s sermon was wonderful, a deep acknowledgement of agony coupled with a shining promise of ultimate joy.

Sailing will never be the same. Erik was Austin's friend and the best rival he ever had. I loved watching them compete fiercely on the water and then return from racing to fun and joking at HYC. Erik is sorely missed.
