Teresa (Gallagher) Ohnemus

Dec 22nd, 2015

OHNEMUS – Teresa (Gallagher) 93 of Yarmouthport died Tuesday December 22, 2015 at the Windsor Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in South Yarmouth.

She was the wife of the late Chester F. Ohnemus who died in 2002. Born in Waltham, Mrs. Ohnemus was the daughter of the late Francis and Mary (Dolan) Gallagher. She was the “Apple” of her father’s eyes. She was raised and educated in the St. Charles Parish of Waltham and was a 1939 graduate of St. Charles School.

Mrs. Ohnemus worked at a bank while waiting for her soon to be husband to return from the war. She and Chet married in 1946 and began raising their large and loving family during the 1950’s. She suffered the tragic loss of her second son due to an automobile accident and persevered through the tragedy while providing care for her children, which includes a daughter with Down Syndrome.

A summer resident of West Yarmouth for many years, Mrs. Ohnemus enjoyed golfing, swimming, cookouts, and sunset boat rides with her husband, Chet.

In 1978, she and Chet retired to Yarmouthport and spent several winter weeks a year in Florida, golfing.

They were members of the Cummaquid Golf Club for many years where they enjoyed great friends, playing golf and bridge. She was a volunteer fundraiser for the Nauset Workshop, now known as Cape Abilities.

She was a loving grandmother whose tollhouse cookies and sour cream coffee cake were staples in her always active kitchen. Christmas Eve, Thanksgiving dinners and cookouts on her deck will always be fond memories for her children and grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Hope Hospice and the staff at Windsor Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their loving care of Teresa through her last days.

Mrs. Ohnemus is survived by two sons, David of Orleans, and William of Yarmouthport; three daughters, Mary of Yarmouth, Marguerite Brownie of Dorval, Quebec, Canada, and Kathleen Mulkern of Plantation, FL; eleven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a son, Matthew.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to Cape Abilities, c/o Nancy Noble, Director of Community Development, 895 Mary Dunn Rd., Hyannis, MA 02601.
