Edward Joseph Mahoney
Nov 22nd, 2024
Edward Joseph Mahoney of Chatham, MA passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family Nov.22, 2024. He was the devoted husband of Barbara (Hapenney) Mahoney who predeceased him in 2015 after 67 years of a loving and joyous marriage.
Ed was born to Catherine (Bryden) Mahoney and George Mahoney on the South side of Waltham MA on March 24, 1928. He grew up with modest means alongside his sister Georgina. He never forgot his roots and valued his Scottish and Irish heritage and his Moms Nova Scotia origins. His spirit, curiosity, faith and the unwavering support from his mother, sister, teachers, friends and extended family helped him to succeed in life and love with remarkable optimism.
Ed met Barbara in 5th grade and they remained friends through the school years. He was like a big brother to her siblings. He graduated from St. Charles High School in 1945. Ed proudly served our country in WWII in the United States Marine Corp. He and Barbara married and raised their five children in Waltham, Sudbury, Chatham, MA and Cary, IL. He attended Boston College. After college, Ed dedicated his career to Rust-Oleum, concluding his impressive tenure as a regional sales manager.
Through these years, they built a cottage in Chatham which they eventually retired to. A diagnosis of ALS for Barbara was extremely challenging, yet they persevered together with love, strength and even humor. Ed Mahoney learned all aspects of caring for his wife and did so for many years. Ed enjoyed softball, his kid’s hockey and activities, traveling, history, helping people, and especially being with all generations of his family as well as cousins and life-long friends.
Besides Barbara, his sister and parents, Ed was predeceased by his grandsons Steven, Joseph and Matthew. He is survived by his children Ed (Mary), Neal (Laura), David, Sally, and John (Kelly). Cherished grandchildren Erin (Darren), Katy (Dan), Cameron (Grace) and Taylor will miss his jokes and stories. He has nine beloved great grandchildren (Sophia, Logan, Caden, Janessa, Charlie, Isla, Josh, Shea and Bobbi) Many nieces, nephews and cousins and friends in New England, Nova Scotia and Scotland will miss him.
Many wonderful memories rest in the hearts of all those who knew Ed Mahoney.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in Ed’s honor at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 481 Quaker Road, East Falmouth, MA on Friday, November 29th at 11:00 AM. Military Honors and Burial will conclude at Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, MA at 12:30 PM.

Uncle Ed and Aunt Barb will always provide fond memories to all who knew them. So thankful for the years they invited all the family members on Cape. Loved connecting with them and cousins there. I appreciate the helpful wisdom that Uncle Ed shared when it was needed. Prayers for those who will be missing him, and in time, that your grief will be replaced with fond memories.
Ed, my brother (in law), my friend, my teacher. You have been in my life since I was about 11 or 12, the fond memories I have of you will be my cherished keepsake. Rest in peace with family and friends. Lovingly, Jeanie
I count myself lucky to know Ed and all the Mahoneys. Lucky to overlap our friendship in Waltham Sudbury and Chatham.
My name is Anne Marie Gallagher. I had the pleasure of meeting Ed and Barbara when I came from Scotland to Chatham for Darren and Erin’s wedding. He was definitely a man who left a very positive and lasting impression on me. I always enquired about how he was doing whenever Erin came to Scotland. Although he will be hugely missed by his family and friends, I hope you can take comfort from knowing that Ed and Barbara are once again back together.
