William Howard Ott, Jr., age 90 of Yarmouthport and formerly of Erie, PA, died peacefully Friday morning, October 21, 2016 at the Pleasant Bay Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Brewster.

He was the husband of the late Florence Ann Weschler. They were married at Saint John’s Church in Erie, in 1947.

Born in Erie, the son of the late William Howard Ott, Sr. and Marie Gertrude Hoehn, William graduated from Technical High School in Erie in 1944. He then served in the Air Force, including a tour of duty in Germany, at the end of World War II. After his military service, he worked for a short time at General Electric in an apprenticeship program. He then worked as a journeyman lineman and later crew chief at the Pennsylvania Electric Company until his retirement in 1989.

William was a dedicated member of the Boy Scout program. He started Explorer Post 9, BSA and volunteered for Troop 9. As an adult scout leader, he received a Silver Beaver award and Wood Badge. He also was awarded Vigil membership in the Order of the Arrow, an honorary Boy Scout camping organization. He was an avid fisherman and crafter of leather work.

He and Florence moved to Yarmouthport in 1992, where he resided until his illness this year. During his many years on Cape Cod, William enjoyed attending the Yarmouth and Dennis Senior Centers and meeting with friends, where he was a veteran cribbage player. He was also a devoted pet lover who cared for his parrot, Peppi and his favorite grand-dog, O’Riley.

He is survived by four children, William N. Ott and his wife, Ann of Archbold, OH, Mark H. Ott and his wife, Kathleen of Yarmouthport, MA, Brian R. Ott and his wife, Judith of Barrington, RI, and Craig M. Ott of Peabody; one brother, John H. Ott and his wife, Marianne of Erie, PA; one sister, Doris M. DeArment and her husband, Wallace of Sun City Center, FL; two grandchildren, Jesse A. Ott of Brighton, and Joshua M. Ott of Barrington, RI; two step-grandsons, Jonathan Cook of Perrysburg, OH, and Jeffrey Cook of Archbold, OH.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday October 25 in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth.

A memorial service will later be held at St. John’s Church and placement of ashes at Calvary Cemetery in Erie, PA on a date to be announced to friends and family there.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Yarmouth Senior Center, 528 Forest Rd, South Yarmouth, MA 02664 or the Dennis Senior Center, 1045 Route 134, South Dennis, MA 02660.
