Alexander G. Provos, Sr., 71 of Dennisport, MA passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully in his home on January 8, 2017. He was born in Corinthia, Greece and grew up in Boston, MA. Mr. Provos served overseas in the Vietnam War for the U.S. Army 1967-1969 and moved to Weymouth where he raised his family. Also, known to his many friends as “Big Al” or “The Greek”, he worked for Department of Corrections for 28 years and retired to The Cape. He is survived by his close, loving sister and friend Helen Provos from Roslindale, his two children Alexander Jr. and his wife Sara of South Yarmouth and his daughter Christina (Provos) Cardella and her husband Daniel Cardella of Bridgewater. He is also survived by his three adored grandchildren, John of South Yarmouth and Zachary and Maddy of Bridgewater and by his cousin Christos Sarhanis and his wife Deborah of Exeter, NH. Big Al enjoyed the retired life, relaxing in the sun at the beach, following every local sports team and riding his Harley Davidson. Most importantly, he loved being with his family. He was a wonderful friend, father, grandfather and brother and that’s how he will be remembered. Visiting hours will be 4-7 PM on Monday January 16th in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Avenue, South Yarmouth, MA. A Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 PM on Tuesday, January 17th at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church, 1130 Falmouth Road, Centerville, MA. Burial will follow at 2:30 PM at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Connery Avenue, Bourne. In lieu of flowers, if you wish to make a donation, donations can be made to St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church.

I had the privilege of working with "The Greek" when I first started in Corrections, at MCI-N. He always had a smile for you. He made my beginning years a lot easier, I know. It was my pleasure to have contact, with him, even after I left Norfolk, from time to time. He'll definitely be missed.

The "Greek" was a great guy who had great "street-wise" common sense when dealing with inmates. Like the TV show detective "Kojak" he would always greet me with "Jingle Bells" as a hello ! He was a real class individual. Rest in peace, my friend.

I knew Alex from work with the DOC. We had many conversations about fine dining in and around the Boston area. Alex had a great laugh and an even bigger smile that I enjoyed. He was probably the best dressed male in the DOC. Alex will be missed by all who knew him, even if they only knew him for a short period; he was that type of person you took a liking to. My sincere condolences to his family, friends and all those who will miss him.

My sincerest condolences to the Provos family! I'll always remember Alex as a friendly, smiling fellow officer who never missed an opportunity to shake my hand and share a story! When he was a rookie at MCIN, perhaps even his first day on the job, he was paired with me in the East Field. While checking on the house officers in that area, we stopped and chatted with a seasoned veteran who chose to "interview" Alex with a number of questions. At the end of the conversation, Alex smiled and shook the house officer's hand, and as we left the unit, the veteran said to him, "Kid, you'll never make it in corrections!" From then on, as Alex's career progressed from behind the walls to State Transportation, that comment remained a personal, humorous greeting between us! "The Greek" did, indeed, "make it in corrections!"
