Wayne C. Miles 79, of East Dennis, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loved ones on Monday January 23, 2017.

Wayne was born in Somerville, the son of the late George and Henrietta (Carroll) Miles. He attended Somerville High School and was a member of the 1955 Somerville High basketball team which won the Class A state title. At Salem State he captained the basketball team in 1960. He later earned a masters degree from Boston University.

Wayne taught high school in Jewett City, CT before coming to Barnstable High School where he taught business and typing until his retirement in 1995.

Wayne began playing tennis on his 30th birthday and quickly became a significant competitor on the Cape. He won many tournaments in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. He coached the Barnstable High girls’ tennis team for many years and was twice named Coach of the Year by the Cape Cod Times. Even after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, Wayne’s determination kept him active playing tennis, golf and walking the beautiful beaches of the Cape. In addition to his athleticism, Wayne will always be remembered for his twinkling eyes, wry smirk and sharp wit.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Sue (Rothenberg) Miles of East Dennis; two nieces, Andrea Akmenkalns and her husband, Will Stapp of Petaluma, CA; Laura Jones and her husband, Brad of Virginia Beach, VA; two nephews, Steve and his wife, Terri, and Craig and his wife, Gina, all from Virginia Beach, VA; a brother-in-law, Mark Rothenberg and his wife, Carolyn Emerson and their daughter Lily, of Setauket, NY.   In addition to his parents, Wayne was predeceased by a brother, George "Tom" Miles and a sister, Sandra Miles.

The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Wayne’s loving caregivers over the years.

Visiting hours will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. with a celebration of Wayne’s life at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday January 25 in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave. South Yarmouth at 4:30.

I had the honor of knowing Wayne in high school days, and at Salem State. He was as fine a gentleman as I ever met. There is an old Irish expression that would certainly apply to Wayne' "Where he walked, it never rained." Slan.

So sad to here of Wayne's passing. He was a great coach and doubles partner. He was so competitive and I learned a lot about the game of tennis from him.
