Josephine (Jo) B. King, a long-time resident of Cape Cod, died peacefully at home in Yarmouth Port on February 23, 2017 after a lengthy illness. Jo was born on July 29, 1926, the daughter of Joseph and Rose Cambal Drahos of North Tarrytown NY. She was a registered nurse who retired in 1982. In 1944, Jo graduated from North Tarrytown High School. Shortly thereafter, she was accepted into the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps. Her training and education took place at Alliance City Hospital and Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio with affiliations at Cleveland City Hospital and Akron Children’s Hospital. Jo graduated President of her class. In 1949, she returned to Westchester County NY and began her career at White Plains Hospital. She started as a Staff Nurse and later became Head Nurse of the Medical/Surgical Unit. After a number of years, Jo left this position to broaden her experience by working in other area hospitals. She later held positions at Hackley School and Marymount College, both in Tarrytown NY where she was in charge of their Health Services. In 1982, she ended her career at Burke Rehabilitation Center in White Plains NY. In 1984, she and her husband, Arthur retired to Cape Cod where they lived in Brewster and later in Yarmouth Port. During her lifetime, Jo’s priorities were her nursing profession, family and friends along with a deep interest in cooking, nutrition and gardening. Jo was an active member of the Nauset Garden Club and also a member of St. Joan of Arc church. She believed strongly in the proverb: “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.” She tried to live her life accordingly. Jo was predeceased by first husband, Stan Sussina whose marriage was finalized in 1960 and her sister, Anne Mascola. Survivors include her husband of 38 years, Arthur King; son Stan Sussina and his wife Carolyn of Walden NY; granddaughter Lauren Andrews and her family of NC; grandson Stan Sussina, Jr. of NC; nephew Laurence Mascola and his family of FL; niece Laurel Torres of FL; Jo’s step children: Christopher King and his wife Nancy of Brewster NY; and John King of Dennisport MA. Jo and her family were very grateful for the outstanding care she received earlier from Hope Hospice; their nurses, CNAs and notably volunteer, Mary Petruzzi who was steadfast and whose kindnesses went far beyond one’s expectations. The family remains grateful for similar, more recent care from the VNA Hospice as well as the round-the-clock services provided by Heidi Rupani’s CNAs. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation at 11:30AM with a funeral service at 12:30PM, on Tuesday, February 28, in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Avenue, South Yarmouth. Burial is private.
