Abby K. Johnson , 94 of Yarmouth Port died Saturday May 20, 2017 at the Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation – Eagle Pond in South Dennis.

Born and raised in Yarmouth, Abby was the daughter of the late Morris and Mary (Kane) Johnson. She was a 1941 graduate of the John Simpkins High School.

Abby served in the U.S. Army during World War II. She served two years at Mather Field in California and Roswell Air Field in New Mexico. She worked as an inspector on B-25 and B-17 aircrafts. She flew to Washington DC for her discharge at Ft. Dix, NJ in a cargo C-54 plane that was piloted by Co. Paul W. Tibbets, who piloted the B-29 plane that dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan in 1945. She was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal in 1945.

Prior to serving in the Army, Abby worked in New Bedford at the Cornell Dublier plant and later at the Morse Twist Drill plant as a machine operator. Following her military service, Abby was employed by Honeywell Inc. in Denver, CO for 18 years, and operated a Pantagraph machine in the machine shop. In 1965 she was thrilled to meet Rev. Billy Graham and sang in his choir at a crusade service held in Denver. She returned to Cape Cod in 1970 where she worked for Screencraft Co. in West Yarmouth. In 1972 she worked as a clock repair person at the Mason and Sullivan Co. in Osterville and West Yarmouth. After she retired in 1984, she worked as a shipper for Family Life Publishing in Dennis.

Abby was an active member of the West Yarmouth Congregational Church since in 1934. She took pride in her backyard vegetable garden, doodled in poetry writing, and was a lover of animals, especially Ginger and Dandy. She was loved and will be missed by her family and friends for her friendship and loyalty, always dispensed with a whimsical sense of humor.

Abby is survived by three nephews, Stephen K. Johnson and his wife, Heidi of Yarmouthport, Michael Johnson and his wife, Nancy of Hyannis, and Richard K. Johnson of Santa Ana, CA; and three grand nieces, Elizabeth, Kerry and Oliva Johnson. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two sisters, Barbara L. Johnson and Carol M. Hunter; and two brothers, Morris I. Johnson, Jr., and former Yarmouth selectman Richard K. Johnson and his wife, Virginia.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to Heidi Johnson and the staff at Eagle Pond for their care and compassion during her illness.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday June 2 in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth.

Visitation will preceed the service beginning at 10 a.m.
