Roy Morton 82 of Yarmouth Port died peacefully at home on July 3, 2015. Although he had not been in good health for some years, his last illness was brief.

He was the husband of Elizabeth “Skee” (Garvey) Morton for many years.

Roy was born in Nashville, TN, lived there as a child, attended high school in Oak Ridge, TN and then Harvard College on an ROTC Scholarship. After graduating in 1955 with a BA in Applied Science, Harvard’s undergraduate engineering degree, he served for three years on destroyers stationed first in Norfolk, VA and then New Orleans.

After his time in the Navy, he joined RCA in Somerville, NJ.  In 1962 he went with IBM and stayed with them for the rest of his working life. The family often moved as he took assignments in various parts of New Jersey, Connecticut, New York, Vienna, Austria, and finally Tampa, FL. During his career he traveled extensively in Europe and the Far East.

In 1989 he took early retirement and he and Skee settled in Yarmouth Port.

He was an avid follower of current events, a staunch conservative, a supporter of local candidates and treasurer of the Yarmouth Republican Committee. He volunteered in the ESL program, joined the board of the MSPCC, and served on the Yarmouth Town Finance Committee from 1992 through 2006, ten years as chairman. He devoted much of his time and energy to the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth, was a member of their Board of Trustees and president three times.

Roy enjoyed traveling, and even more spending time with his friends, and he felt blessed to be living in Yarmouth Port.

In addition to his wife, Roy is survived by his son, Ken Morton of Barnstable; his brother, John Morton of Spartanburg, SC; and his two nieces Lillian and Bethany.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday July 17 in St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 3055 Main St., Barnstable.

As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Historic Society of Old Yarmouth, P.O. Box 11, Yarmouth Port, MA 02675.

Roy was a dear friend and wonderful person, and we will forever cherish the time we spent together. Roy was always kind and giving, and shared many days of his life with those and the causes he felt would contribute to a better world. While we are saddened with the loss of our dear friend, we are eternally grateful to have shared so much time with such a wonderful person. Roy, with all of our love, may you rest in peace in the hands of God. Jon & Nancy Bryan
