George A. Buffington 88 of Yarmouth Port and formerly of Swansea and Ashland, died Wednesday June 7, 2017 at Harbor Point Assisted Living in Centerville.

He was the husband of Joan (Read) Buffington and the late Beverly (Dalzell) Buffington who died in 1995 after 45 years of marriage.

Born in Rumford, ME, George was the son of the late Arthur and Olive (Roberts) Buffington. He was raised and educated in Swansea. He served in the U.S. Army, during the Korean Conflict, at Fort Hood in Texas as an airplane mechanic. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal in 1954.

Having a lifelong passion for aviation, George worked for Raytheon for 43 years as an experimental machinist. During this time he made the telescoping flag pole which went to the moon.

George and his late wife, Beverly made their home in Ashland, where they raised their two daughters. After her death, he married Joan Read Clough of Wayland. They moved to Brewster in 2001 and enjoyed square dancing with the Nau-Sets Square Dance Club, traveling, and working on their new home.

A very talented do-it-yourselfer evidenced by his creative solutions to many projects, , George spent many hours on his favorite hobby, clock repair.

George enjoyed playing golf, and sailing his boat which he had done since his youth. He was an active member of the Dennis Union Church.

In addition to his wife, George is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Baker and her husband, James of Meredith, NH, and Sandra Grindrod and her husband, Michael of Melbourne, FL; six grandchildren, Stephanie, Kate, Kelley and Robert Gavin, and Grant and Laura Baker; four step-children, Kenneth, Edward, Barbara, and Richard Clough; and six step grandchildren, Sarah, Hannah, Tyler, Lauren, Jaxon and Camden. In addition to his wife and parents, George was predeceased by a brother, Alfred, and a sister, Ann.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday June 18 in the Dennis Union Church, 713 Main St. (Route 6A), Dennis.

Interment will be private.
