William A. Meins 93 of Harwich and formerly of South Yarmouth, died peacefully in his sleep Sunday March 4, 2018 with his son, Stewart at his side.

He was the husband of the late Millicent W. (Wilbar) Meins who died in 2016.

A descendent of John Alden, Bill was born and raised in Brockton. He was the son of the late Walter C. and Helen (Baker) Meins. He graduated from Sumner High School in Holbrook and immediately joined the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII, serving in the CBI (China, Burma, India) theater. He served as crew chief in Burma on the P40 (Roundtrip) and the P51 (BayStater) – reconnaissance aircraft and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant, earning three Bronze Stars. After his honorable discharge in 1945, Bill returned to Brockton where he met his future wife, Millicent “Penny” Wilbar, whom he married in 1948.

Bill began a very distinguished career as a sales representative for several large paint companies. He and Penny settled in Agawam where they had three children. Job change brought them to Nashua, NH where they raised their family until Bill’s retirement in 1983. They packed up and moved to their second home in South Yarmouth where they spent several years before deciding to purchase a winter home in Lady Lake, Fl to escape the cold winters. They were snowbirds for many years before eventually deciding to stay on the Cape year-round.

Bill loved boating, fishing, detailing his cars and watching his beloved Red Sox. He was a past member of the Masonic Lodge, initially joining the Springfield lodge. He always enjoyed a big family cookout, especially when he didn’t have to do the cooking and could relax. When he lost his sight several years ago things became tough, but his devoted wife was always by his side. His biggest loss was when she passed in 2016.

Bill is survived by three children, Cheryl Thompson and her husband, Bernard of Windham, NH, Stewart Meins and his wife, Cynthia of Yarmouthport, and William Meins and his wife, Ellen Massa-Meins of Eastham; seven grandchildren, Heather Kendall, Jessica Pinnetti, Chad Meins, Justin Meins, Stacie Morgado, Ethan Thompson, and Sean Sullivan; six step-grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and five step-great grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, Bill was predeceased by a sister, Nancy DeYoung, and his daughter in-law, Debbie Meins.

The family would like to thank the Professional Nurse and Home Care of Cape Cod for all of the wonderful caregivers they provided - especially Christine Simpson, who gave tireless loving care.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday March 17 in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave, South Yarmouth.

Interment will follow in Ancient Cemetery, Yarmouthport.

Visitation will precede the service beginning at 11 a.m. in the funeral home.

As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Perkins School for the Blind, 175 North Beacon St., Watertown, MA 02472.
