Captain Irving H. Gardner, 100, of Yarmouthport, Mass., passed away peacefully on October 29, 2018. An avid sailor and seaman all his life, after graduation from the Brooks Academy in Harwich, Mass. the “Captain” served in the US Coast Guard during WWII stationed in Iceland. He was a Boston Harbor Pilot for over 30 years until he retired in 1980. A skilled golfer and member of the Cummaquid Golf Club for many years, he also loved fishing, gardening, and music. He dedicated countless hours to the Historical Society of Cape Cod, serving as director and producer for his beloved wife Jean Gardner’s, “Tales of Cape Cod”.

Irving Herbert Gardner was born in Fitchburg, Mass. to Ruth and Alexander Gardner on April 26, 1918. He married his wife of 73 years, Jean Duffie, on March 1, 1943 in Boston, Mass. Irv is preceded in death by his parents, wife Jean, daughters Jan and Lynne Gardner, sister in-law Marcia Durfor, and brothers-in-law Donald Durfor and Raymond Fleck.

Irv is survived by his devoted son Jeffrey Gardner of Cambridge, Mass, and his sister in-law Ann Fleck of Franklin, Mass. In addition, his nieces Marianne Durfor, Susan Haskell, and Carol Whetzel, their families, and his nephews William Fleck and Michael Durfor and their families.

Funeral services will be held at 1 PM, November 17, 2018 in the Hallett Funeral Home 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth. Burial will be private.
