Richard K. Gross

Gross, Richard K., 91, of Brewster, passed away Friday, May 15, 2015 at Epoch Senior Healthcare of Brewster.  He was the husband of Diane A. Gross for over 29 years.

Born July 14, 1923 in Mount Vernon, New York, he was the son of the late Carl G. Gross and Blanche P. King. Richard graduated from Edison Technical and Vocational High School in New York in June 1942. He attended New York State Maritime Academy and received a diploma in the Engine Department as an Ensign on January 5, 1944.  
 
After graduation, he served in the Merchant Marines, sailing as 3rd Assistant Engineer, Junior Engineer and 2nd Assistant Engineer during  World War II; earning the Atlantic, Pacific Mediterranean and Middle East War Zone Bars. After the War, he continued to sail for a time.  He earned a Chief Engineer License on August 25, 1954.
 
Richard was employed by the Bailey Meter Company for many years. He left the company to help start up Canal Electric Plant on the Cape Cod Canal, which later became Com/Energy.  He retired from there in 1983. 
 
He enjoyed sailing; owning a couple sailboats over the years. Richard also enjoyed fishing, making and repairing things, working in the yard, and loved to play piano. He and his wife, Diane, enjoyed dancing on a Saturday night. 
 
Richard was a life member of the Wareham Lodge of Elks and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge in Yarmouth. He was also a member of the American Merchant Marine Veterans.
 
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, William Gross and wife, Sandra; his daughters Karen Pires and husband, Joseph; and Holly Salgueiro.  Grandchildren, Kenneth and Christine Gross, Jeffrey Pires, Jennifer Reed, Stephanie Salgueiro and Christel Roysum; and five Great-Grandchildren, Brigt, Adam, Anna and Sarah Roysum, and Jacob Reed.  Also surviving is his brother Charles K. Gross and a niece, Susan Nigro and Nephew Gross.
 
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2015 from 6-8pm, in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave, South Yarmouth.   Funeral service will be held on Friday, at 10am, in the Funeral Home. Interment will follow at 12:45pm in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, MacArthur Blvd, Bourne
