Chief Roy Earl Jones, III (Retired) 74 of Brewster died Saturday June 22, 2019 after a long illness.

He was the husband of Susan (Swan) Jones. They were married for 52 years.

Born in Weymouth, Roy was the son of the late Roy Jr. and Katherine (Lawrence) Jones. He lived in Hingham and Chenango Bridge, NY before settling in the Brewster.

Roy attended Brewster Elementary School, graduated from Dennis Yarmouth Regional High School, and received his BS degree in Business Administration from the University of Maryland, where he was a volunteer member of the College Park, Maryland fire department. He also received his Master’s degree from Suffolk University in Boston.

Roy served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1973.

For many years Roy worked as an insurance agent and was part owner of the former Drake, Swan and Crocker Insurance Agency in Orleans.

Roy served on the Brewster Fire Department for 47 years and served as Chief for 29 of those years. He retired from the Brewster Fire Department in 2010.

A former Brewster Park Club Safety Committee member, Roy also served on the Board of Directors of the former Medi-Center Five in Harwich, was a Past President and member of the Board of Directors of the Barnstable County Fire Chiefs Association, a former member and chairman of the Barnstable County Mutual Aid and Radio Committee, a state appointed District Fire Coordinator for MEMA, and he taught Fire Service classes and seminars at several institutions, including Cape Cod Community College, Massachusetts Maritime Academy and the National Fire Academy in Emmetsburg, MD.

Roy was an avid model train collector and a founding member of the Nauset Model Railroad Club. He was also actively involved with the “RTA” Regional Transit Authority on Cape Cod.

Roy’s hobbies include his love of history, specifically the Civil War, driving and working on his 1966 Pirsch fire engine (retired) from College Park, MD and of course running his model trains. Most of all he loved spending time with his family and friends.

In addition to his wife, Roy is survived by two daughters, Kristina Patel, and her husband, Kinjal of Franklin, and Stephanie Swidzinksi and her husband, Ted of Orleans; three siblings, David Jones of Haymarket, VA, Stephen Jones and his wife, Diane, and Katherine Jones, all of Brewster; four grandchildren, Deven, Sajel and Jayden Patel, and Ethan Swidzinski; and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday July 2 in the Brewster Baptist Church, 1848 Main St., Brewster.

Interment will be private.

Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday July 1 in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth.

As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Brewster Fire Association, 1671 Main St., Brewster, MA 02631.

There is not enough time or space to write or express what a fine human being this man was. To his family and extended family my deepest sympathy. The meetings we attended together, the lunches we solved all the fire service problems over will never be forgotten. Thank you for everything you did to make me better at my job. Go rest high upon that mountain, your work here is done. Rest in peace my friend

To the entire family of Chief Jones I would like to express my sincere sympathy. I was a comrade of Roy's for seven years and I enjoyed working with him on projects and of course large Cape brush fires. It has been an honor to have been his friend.

There are no words that will be sufficient to share at this time of crushing sorrow and loss, only hugs to hold you, a tissue to hand you and hours of tea and friendship. Our deepest love, Sue and Marty

Rest well my friend. Save a dance for me (with Susan's permission of course) when we meet again.
