Stephen E. Hart, 77 of Yarmouth Port MA passed away at the Cape Cod Hospital on July 2, 2019 surrounded by the love and support of his family.

Steve, as known to family and friends, was the son of the late Ira F. and Mary V. (Rogers) Hart. He was born in Jamaica Plain and grew up in Malden, MA. He is survived by his loving wife, Miriam of almost 56 years and three daughters: Andrea Smith and her husband, Steven of Cumming GA, Suzanne Hart and her wife, Karen Salvas of Bloomfield CT, Michele Gates and her husband, Abraham of Keene NH as well as cherished grandchildren, Erica Smith and Mia and Mason Gates.

He graduated from Merrimack College in 1964 and Boston University School of Education in 1970. He later participated in a doctoral course program for the administration of special education conducted by the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

A resident of Hingham for many years. Steve worked most of his successful career in the area of education with 28 years of service for the Town of Cohasset. For his last 12 years prior to retirement, he served as superintendent of schools. In earlier years, Steve was appointed Cohasset’s first administrator of special education. This was in 1974 when Chapter 766 first became law in MA which required special needs students to have access to appropriate quality education and/or treatment options. During this period, Steve was also named the first interim director of the South Shore Collaborative. Over his many years, Steve remained fully involved in the implementation of the METCO program for the Town of Cohasset as well.

Gratefully, a few years after an early retirement in 1998, Steve was able to relax and enjoy almost two decades of living on the Cape after he and Miriam moved to their new condominium in the community of Kings Way in Yarmouth Port. He appreciated the many natural beauties of the Cape while making new and lasting friendships. Steve and Miriam could be found most mornings having their morning cup of coffee at the Mercantile in Dennis Village. Steve and Miriam together were without a doubt “one of the regulars”. Starting in 2002 and for a 10-year period, Steve was also a volunteer with the construction of 18 new homes in Hyannis for Habitat of Humanity of Cape Cod as well as being a family sponsor. Steve was also an active participant in the happenings of his condominium community and a member of their Board of Trustees for a 4-year period. With a smile on his face, Steve was always ready to lend a hand and reach out to those in need.

As requested and planned, in a very special way, Steve’s life will be celebrated privately by his family.

Miriam and family, please accept my deepest sympathies. Steve was an incredible human being and I feel privileged to have worked for him for 16 years. Although we lost touch over the years, I am so sorry to have learned about his passing in a most peculiar way! He will always be remembered as a most compassionate person, kind and generous in every way. Thinking of you. Ilene

I happened to stumble on this obituary and I realized that this was the same Steve Hart that I attended grammar school with at St. Joseph's School in Malden. It sounds like he had a very fulfilling and productive life. I'm very familiar with that 766 law was enacted as I was a teacher and guidance counselor for over 40 years so I'm well aware of what a daunting, challenging job he had and it appears that he was very successful as he the became a superintendent! Another impossible job in my opinion. So he must have been quite the person and a good man. I'm very sorry for your loss, may he rest in peace.

Dear Miriam, It was very sad to hear that Steve has passed on. I am privileged to have met a man of Steve's character who regularly put others before himself even when not feeling well. I have been told many stories of both of your generosity and kindness towards my parents Art and Jo over the years. I'm sure Steve's legacy will have many accolades. My personal impressions were that of a man who was always there to help without hesitation, always supportive, always a friend. I'm glad I had the chance meet Steve, He was the definition of a good man. Sincerely, Stan Sussina
