Leo M. Kenney 73 of South Yarmouth died Wednesday August 28, 2019 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

He was the husband of Dianne (Casey) Kenney. They had been married for 51 years.

Born in Boston, Leo was the son of the late Bernard S. and Ruth (Pengilly) Kenney. He attended St. Mary’s in Dedham and graduated from Boston College High School. He received degrees from the University of Notre Dame and the University of Miami Law School.

A 20 year veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, Leo served during the Vietnam War. He was stationed in Yorktown, VA, Portsmouth, VA, Miami, FL, Kodiak, AK, Boston, MA and Washington, DC. He retired honorably with the rank of Lieutenant Commander in 1989.

Upon his retirement, Leo moved to South Yarmouth where he was an attorney for children until he suffered a stroke in 2000.

Leo was a communicant at St. Pius X Church, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, and the Notre Dame Alumni Association.

In addition to his wife, Leo is survived by two sons, Leo “Butch” and his wife, Jean of Tomball, TX, and Sean and his wife, Tracie of Lancaster, OH; a daughter, Karen Quimby and her husband, Howard of Orlando, FL; and seven grandchildren, Chaeli, Brenna, Abby, Anna, and Patrick Kenney; Nicole and Krista Quimby; and Andrew Holst. In addition to his parents, Leo is predeceased by a sister, Gail Kenney.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday September 9 in Saint Pius X Church, Station Ave., South Yarmouth.

Interment will follow at 1:30 p.m. in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday September 8 in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the Paramedics and EMT’s of the Yarmouth Fire Dept., and to the ICU staff at Massachusetts General Hospital, Blake 12, for the exceptional care provided to Leo.

As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Yarmouth Rescue Squad, 96 Old Main St., South Yarmouth, MA 02664 or to the charity of one’s choice.
