Herbert H. King passed peacefully at the Cape Cod Hospital on November 2, 2019 after bravely fighting breast cancer for 13 years. He was Known by many as the “mayor” of Little Cove. Herb was born in Boston, MA on January 14, 1935 and is survived by his loving wife and best friend of more than 60 years, Denise S. King. He was a wonderful father to three daughters: Maribeth Burch of West Dennis, MA, Deb Bayrouty of Windham, NH, and Denise “Dina” Caple who predeceased him and passed away after her own valiant battle with breast cancer in 2000 at the age of 37. Herb’s six grandchildren and his three great- grandchildren will miss their loving “Papa” and will always have fond memories of his keen wit and charming personality. Herb’s two living sisters - Raymah Hutchinson of East Longmeadow, MA and Maureen Greenblatt of Florida as well as his brother -n -law and sister in- law Robert and Sandra Melanson of Maine also mourn his passing. Herb also leaves several nieces and nephews and their families. Herb was predeceased by his parents, Clarence F. and Raymah C. King, his brother Clarence “Red” King, and his sister Carolyn Fair.

After graduating from St. Sebastian’s Preparatory School, Herb attended Stonehill College in North Easton, MA where he met Denise the love of his life. He graduated from Stonehill in 1958 and worked in the field of public housing for almost forty years, retiring in 1999 from his position as the executive director of the Framingham Housing Authority. During his lifetime, he and Denise traveled extensively creating wonderful memories with family and many, many friends, Also, Herb was a volunteer at the Family Pantry of Cape Cod in Harwich, MA for several years. As a close acquaintance recently commented, Herb was a “prince among men.”

An avid sports fan, Herb will also be missed by the multitude of friends who would gather with him at the West Dennis Yacht Club on Sundays to watch the Patriots play. As a member of the WDYC for over 40 year where he served as the Fleet Captain for several years, Herb enjoyed friends and family on occasions too numerous to count, but his most memorable experiences included playing cribbage on Thursday afternoons, enjoying the company of close friends on Friday nights, and sailing with his daughter Dina in the weekly Sunday races for many years. His family is comforted by the fact that he has now joined Dina.

Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 6 pm at the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Avenue, South Yarmouth, MA on Thursday, November 7, 2019. A funeral mass will be held at 10 am on Friday, November 8, 2019 at St. Pius X Church, Station Avenue, South Yarmouth, MA. Interment will follow at 2 pm at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Easton.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Herb’s name to The Family Pantry of Cape Cod.
