Robert K. Edwards, son of the late Roger G. and Lillian Cabble Edwards died at home at the age of 87 on Nov. 13, 2019 after a long illness. He is survived by his wife Martha and their two children, Adriel (Peter) Galvin and son Robert Edwards, his first wife Elaine and their four children Stephen (Song) Edwards, Larry (Teresia) Edwards, Richard Edwards, and James Edwards; grandchildren Lindsay, Taylor, Julia, Simon, Eddie, Braeland, Chandra, Jack and Ryan, Alexandra and great-grandchildren Timothy, Brian and Archer. His brother Roger Edwards and Sister Muriel Hocking predeceased him.

Bob was born in Springfield, MA and grew up in Yarmouth. He graduated from Tabor Academy in 1950. During his time at Tabor he developed a love for sailing and he was a standout athlete in wrestling. He graduated from Wentworth College in 1952 with a degree in machine construction and tool design. He served in the Air Force from 1952 until 1956 and was stationed at Pinecastle AFB, now Mc.Coy AFB in Orlando, FL. Bob worked with his Dad and Brother Roger Jr. in the family business, American Metallic Fabric Company, a wire weaving plant in S. Yarmouth. He volunteered as a youth baseball coach and umpired for his children’s teams. In his retirement he volunteered for the CCAC. Bob was also an amateur ham/radio operator: K1LEK_W1CCL, and a regular noontime participant in the Texas Tower Net.

Always community service oriented he joined the YPD in 1966 as a fulltime reserve police officer. Named reserve officer of the year in 1975. He was manager at Radio Shack stores for many years. Approached in 1973 by the Emergency Room physician, together they designed and implemented the first radio connection between the local fire department and the E.R. This communication system improved the well being of patients assisted by first responders. The system served as a blueprint for emergency services in Massachusetts and beyond. For decades he was Civil Defense Director, renamed Emergency Preparedness Director for Yarmouth and served on many town committees. He was a member of The Howard Lodge in S. Yarmouth.

He loved country music, the Red Sox and his collection of elephants.

I haven't seen Bob in 40 years but he was a contributor in the amateur radio community. I remember when he married Martha, she rejuvenated him. He lived near me near West Yarmouth road.

My condolences to Martha, Rob, and Adriel. Since I was a kid I associated Mr. Edwards with Radio Shack, though I didn't understand all of his talents and how much he helped our Cape community. Rest in Peace.
