Jean (Smith) Cahill of Barnstable, MA passed away peacefully on December 13, 2019 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Born Jean Ann Smith to Priscilla and William Smith on August 21, 1951 in Cambridge, MA, she moved to Hyannis where she was raised with her 5 brothers. In 1969 she graduated from Barnstable High School and pursued a diploma from Mount Auburn Hospital School of Nursing. Jean touched many lives as a nurse for 40 years; eventually as the managing nurse of the local dialysis center, and finishing her career in the cardiac catheterization lab at Cape Cod Hospital.

Her passions included helping others and spending time with her many friends and family. Jean especially looked forward to entertaining for large parties to celebrate the holidays, and catching the fireworks from her family’s roof in Hyannis. She loved expanding her family’s horizons by taking in many exchange students over the years and opening her house to everyone she met along the way. Jean was an avid tennis player, and spent countless hours on the beaches of Cape Cod. She enjoyed skiing trips to Vermont and New Hampshire with family and friends. Jean could always be counted on for her warm smile, positive attitude, and wonderful sense of humor. She will be remembered as a devoted mother, wife, and friend and a gracious host to all who were lucky enough to have known her along the way.

Jean leaves behind her husband of 39 years Frederick Cahill, and her three children; Patrick Cahill of West Barnstable; Karen Cahill and her husband Joseph Kampschmidt of Hyannis; Liam Cahill of Jamaica Plain; three stepchildren, Sean Cahill of Dorchester; Bevin Llanes, married to Eric Llanes of Holbrook, NY; and Tara Riley of Virginia Beach, VA. She is also survived by her mother Priscilla Smith, and her 5 brothers: Steven Smith and his wife Cathy; Paul Smith; J. Robert Smith and his wife Sharon; Mark Smith and his wife Peggy; and Jack Smith and his wife Julia. She leaves behind 9 grandchildren, 11 nieces and nephews, and countless friends with whom she enjoyed her life. She will be dearly missed by all.

The Cahill family would like to thank the staff of Harbor Point and Broad Reach Hospice for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers or cards, consider a donation to: National Kidney Foundation, Finance Department, 30 East 33rd St. New York, NY 10016; or Cape Cod Healthcare Foundation, Post Office Box 370, Hyannis, MA 02601.

Dear Cahill Family, You are all in my prayers with the loss of Jean. Jean and I took piano lessons when we were 5 or 6 years old at the Conservatory School on South Street in Hyannis. I loved her from the first moment we met. She was so much fun! I have a picture of us both playing the piano together. Later on, I met her again when ours boys attended Sacred Heart School in Kingston. Our sons became fast friends. You all are in my thoughts and prayers. Pam Bill King
