David W. Hoffman, 73, died Friday, Sept. 18, 2020. He was the loving husband of 45 years to Lynn (Fiocchetta) Hoffman. David was born in Boston, MA to the late C. William and Florence Hoffman. He graduated from Watertown High School in 1966, carrying his Raider pride continuously throughout his life. He served in the U.S. Army from 1968-1969, completing a tour of duty in Vietnam.

Upon moving his family to the Cape in 1980, he spent over 40 years in the restaurant industry as a bartender, manager and owner. His true passion was years spent coaching, refereeing, and mentoring countless young athletes. He began as a park instructor in Watertown then moved on to join the coaching staff at St. Patrick’s High School of Watertown where he led the JV team to an undefeated 18-0 season in 1975-76. A true testament to his passion were the lasting relationships he has maintained with many of those athletes to this day. His greatest joy was sharing his love of sports with his four children through mentoring and developing their athleticism, the pinnacle of that being sharing the court with his son officiating high school basketball.

Fondly known as “Hoff”, his infectious smile and positive attitude made him a legend to all that knew and loved him. He will be remembered as the life of party and someone who always put friends and family first.

Beside his loving wife, he is survived by his children, David Hoffman and fiancé Stephany Kovar of West Yarmouth; Michelle Hoffman of Dorchester; Erin and Matt Kelley of Harwich; and Kara and Lou Malzone of Yarmouthport. He also leaves his grandchildren: Madelena, Peyton, Elena, Louis, Shea, Tori, and Ainsley. He is also survived by his brother, Norman Hoffman and his wife, Pat of Texas, and his sister, Bonnie Albritton and her husband Jean of Florida as well as loving in-laws and many nieces and nephews. As Hoff always said when asked how ya doing “on a scale of 1-10, I’m an 11”. We love you 21.

Visiting hours will be held from 3:00pm to 6:00pm on Saturday, September 26, 2020 in the Hallett Funeral Home 273 Station Ave, South Yarmouth. Interment will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Town of Watertown, Attn: Recreation Department, 149 Main St. Watertown, MA 02472

I played against David from 7th grade through high school. I'm from waltham originally. We always joked about them never beating us. A great competitor and a truly good friend. He will be missed.

Hoff was at least an 11. Always upbeat, couldn't do enough for the people around him - and a pretty good Zebra, too. Got to know him 20 years ago when we both worked for Nauset, then discovered we'd played against each other in high school. I'll think of him every time I go to a basketball game, wishing I'd get lucky and see Hoff with his whistle.
