Steven C. Kelley
share

It is with great sadness that the family of Stevie Kelley shares the news of his passing on November 16, 2020. He was certainly a larger than life guy who meant so much to so many. We will always treasure that wonderful twinkle in those Irish eyes and that mischievous grin that always let us know that he was up to something. Steve fought the good fight, but a cure was not to be found, and that wonderful heart that was full of love, was just too tired.

Steve was the beloved husband of Barbara (McCarthy) Kelley.

Steve loved life – he loved his wife, he loved his daughters, and he loved his family and friends. He was always happiest either on Mayflower Beach (some deemed him to be the Mayor) or on the golf course.

Born in 1953, Steve was the son of the late Isaiah and Margaret (Kelley) Kelley and was always proud of the fact that he was a fifth generation native Cape Codder.

Steve is survived by two daughters, Amanda Kelley of Plymouth, and Bridget Kelley of Leominster; two step-sons, Daniel Gioiosa of Dartmouth and Jaryd Gioiosa of New Bedford; one step-daughter, Meagan Perry of Berkley; three brothers, Franklin Kelley of West Dennis, George Kelley of West Yarmouth, and Richard Kelley of Harwich; four sisters, Catherine Kelley of South Dennis, Karen Kelley of Dennis Port, Margaret Kelley of Bath, ME, and Joan Kelley of Tatum, NM; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, John Kelley.

Visiting hours will be held Saturday November 21 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth to be followed by a graveside service at 12:30 p.m. in Oak Ridge Cemetery, South Dennis.

As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod, Suite D-3, 434 Route 134, South Dennis, MA 02660.

The oldest of nine children, Stevie Kelley, had a sparkle in his eye and magnificent smile that invited one in return. I think he absorbed all of the extrovert energy from our parents- he was one of the most outgoing people I know. As one of his daughters said, he had the gift of gab-he could make friends with a sand pebble. He went out of his way to make new friends. Stevie had a stubborn Irish side and was very particular, but he was a softy at heart. As self-appointed Mayor of Mayflower Beach, Steve, Billy, and Brad would arrive at nearly pre-dawn hours to set up “the circle” to ensure there was room for the whole gang of regulars and anyone else lucky enough to share the experience.. he absolutely loved the beach. One niece recalled his glistening tan, gold chain, hairy chest and golden curls- our golden Lion. His passion for golf was known by many, and it sounds like there are many, many stories of great times. He especially treasured his time golfing with his brothers each Father’s Day. He loved having family over for the holidays and recently reminisced how much he loved cooking his prime rib for Christmas- his favorite holiday. He shared his time between the Kelley and Giosa clans who called him Stevie Kelley with affection. He would insist on detailed gift lists for his soul-mate Barb, his daughters Amanda, Bridget and his grandson Kaiden. He went out of his way to get everything just right, and he set up his own wrapping station to ensure everything was as perfect as it could be. This past year has been a difficult one. COVID, ever in the background, made it difficult on many fronts. My big brother who hated hospitals endured much, but he knew he had the love and support of many. He never lost his sense of humor. He forever lives on in our hearts and memories. I imagine him at peace enjoying endless sunshine. With love, little sis- Margaret (Maggie) Kelley

My Stevie Kelley my life will never be the same. There will forever be an emptiness that can only be filled by you. I pray that you are happy and no longer in pain. I will miss you until the time comes when we can be together again. I am so very grateful for the life we had together and will treasure the memories we have created together. As our wedding song said “All that’s left is loving you - forever

My heart is broken Stevie Kelley. I loved having you for a big brother. You fought so hard to stay with us. May you find peaceful rest with a beautiful beach and a golf course. Heaven has gained a very special angel. You are so loved. Joan

Steve was one of my best friends. We met about 15 years ago and immediately realized we shared some very important common interests: golf, dining out, Mayflower beach, and margaritas. Whenever Cindy and I were on the way to the Cape I'd call Steve to figure out when we could get together. He and Barb would always include us in their plans and through them we met many other good friends. He was indeed a “larger than life” personality who would light up a room and enliven any get together. He was always enthusiastically looking forward to the next big event whether it was a beach party, a BBQ, a house party, a golf tournament or a dinner. I will miss him as much as anyone can miss a good friend. It is a bittersweet truth that he enriched my life so much in the past 15 years that he now leaves a huge void in my life. I’m certain that’s true for dozens of others as well. Greg and Cindy Ertel
