Nancy Jane Kerr-Smith, 79, a resident of Yarmouthport, passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness on Saturday, October 10, 2015. Nancy has been joyfully reunited with her daughter, Sherry A. Kerr, and first husband, Edward L. Kerr Jr., in heaven.

Nancy was a loving mother, wife, and educator who possessed an unworldly level of kindness that inspired friends, family, and hundreds of students. Nancy was born November 20, 1935, the daughter of the late Helen (Dunlap) and Walter E. Pollard, formerly of Arlington, MA. Nancy graduated from Springfield College in 1957, where she first met Laurence A. Smith of Yarmouthport, MA, who later became her loving second husband of 17 years, after both had been widowed. Nancy earned her master’s degree in special education from Regis College while raising four daughters who all adored her. She spent most of her teaching career in the Hudson Public Schools of Hudson, MA as an outstanding special education teacher. Nancy had an unwavering faith in God and served Him well at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Acton, MA and later at St. David’s Episcopal Church in South Yarmouth, MA. Her love of God could be heard during her heartfelt graces at family dinners, but was most evident in how she carried out her life.

Nancy loved drawing and painting in her spare time and enjoyed sharing her talents with her many grandchildren who all have wonderful memories of their special grandmother. One could always count on Nancy to genuinely praise her family or friends when told of an accomplishment, regardless of how big it actually was. This was just one of the ways Nancy made all of us feel better about ourselves and love her even more.

Nancy leaves her loving and devoted husband Laurence A. Smith of Yarmouthport, daughters Bonnie L. Connors (Kerr) and husband Daniel S. Connors, III of Wellesley, MA, Joan K. Newlon (Kerr) of Medfield, MA, Laura Kerr-Slattery and husband R. Patrick Slattery of Peabody, MA, many grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. Additionally, Nancy leaves her sister Betty Hoar of Essex, CT, step-sons Glenn A. Smith and wife Joan of Millington, NJ and Wayne G. Smith and wife Kris of Jacksonville, OR, and many dear friends.

All family and friends are invited to call at the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth, on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 from 2-5 p.m. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at 11 a.m. at St. David’s Episcopal Church, 205 Old Main Street, South Yarmouth. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the St. David’s Episcopal Church Scholarship Fund, 205 Old Main Street, South Yarmouth, MA 02664.
