DENNIS – Filomena Rose (Tursi) Campbell, 95, of Dennis died from complications due to Covid-19 on Friday January 1, 2021 at the Atria in Woodbriar in Falmouth.

She was the wife of the late Edward F. Campbell who died in 2015.

Born, raised and educated in Hartford, CT, Mrs. Campbell was the daughter of the late James and Marianna (Russo) Tursi. She was a 1944 graduate of Mount Saint Joseph Academy in West Hartford, CT, and received her bachelor’s degree in 1951 from Trinity College in Burlington, VT where she was very involved in college life. She then received her master’s degree in education from Trinity College in Hartford.

Upon graduation from Trinity College, she was employed as a chemist at Fuller Brush, Inc. in CT. She changed her career path and taught junior high school science and math after her first born at E.B. Kennelly School in Hartford, CT.

Mrs. Campbell loved teaching and her students. She was tough but fair, and her classroom was an environment where her students could find structure and nurturing. Students who had tough times at home knew that they could find solace and peace in her classroom and those stories are still shared and talked about today.

Practical teaching was always her passion as she organized a science project that taught her students how to plant seedlings and grow them into beautiful plants in order to organize a successful plant sale. The goal was to have the proceeds to purchase an air conditioning system for her classroom, and the project was a success. The only AC in the entire school was in Mrs. Campbell’s room.

When she retired from teaching, she and her husband moved to Cape Cod. She travelled the world, and spent more time with family as she organized and joined bridge, bowling and rosarian clubs.

She always lived in the moment saying, “Life is for the living”. Although she lived in Hartford, she would often say “this is where we hang our hat, our home is on Cape Cod” where she and her family summered in the house that her father built.

Mrs. Campbell is survived by a son, William and his wife Amy of West Dennis; a daughter, Marianne Martin and her husband Brad of Marstons Mills; and four grandchildren Derek, Colleen, Mariella and Alyssa.

Filomena was a lifelong communicant of the Roman Catholic church.

Funeral services will be private, and a celebration of her life will be held when it is safe to do so. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to Compassionate Care ALS (CCALS) PO Box 1052, West Falmouth, MA 02574.

Somehow my cousins and I do not remember that James Tursi was married to "Marianna Russo". Please clarify if you can. Deepest condolences to the Campbell and Martin families. The Matriarch has joined her husband. She leaves a legacy in her family and contacts. While I never had the fortune to meet this beautiful lady, I see the goodness, love and great qualities of her that continue in her children and grandchildren. May she rest in eternal peace.
