Joseph D. Fennell, 62, of Wareham, formerly of Harwich, passed away unexpectedly, Friday, October 30, 2015. He was the beloved husband of Lillian (Aufiero) Fennell. Born in Lynn, Joe graduated from Lynn English High School and received his Associate’s Degree from Northside Community College in Criminal Justice. He started his 35 year career with the Chatham Police Department as summer Special Officer, later becoming a full time Officer with the Department as a Patrolman. During his career, he was a Youth and DARE Officer, serving in the Chatham Public Schools. He had many supporting role, including Court Prosecutor, Elder Affairs Officer and Domestic Violence Officer. Joe received several letters of Departmental Commendation and Citizen Appreciation. He retired as Sergeant in 2009. Joe was also involved with the Holy Trinity Youth Group for 10 years and ECHO of Cape Cod. He was very dedicated and would be there for anyone who needed him. He loved to cook and spend time with his family. Joe was the loving father of Katie, Billy and the late Terri Fennell; loving stepfather of Tommy, Jessica, Jimmy and Victoria; and loving grandfather of Kassidy, Lilly, Liliana and Siena. He was also the loving brother of Inez Accursio, Robert Fennell and wife, Odette; and loving uncle of Ashley and Tanya Fennell. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, November 5, 2015, from 4-7pm, in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave, South Yarmouth. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, November 6th, at 11am, in the Holy Trinity Church, 246 Route 28, West Harwich, followed by burial in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Route 124, Harwich. I am saddened by the news of the passing of Joe. He is a classmate from the Original Criminal Justice College in Lynn and Beverly. A good man and a Good Police officer, helpful to all. Peace to Him and to his family. Robert Champagne

My deepest sympathies to your family Joe and especially your sister Inez. You are the kindest man. Always there to help, and a friend forever. Thinking back to the old neighborhood and school days, Shoemaker, OLA, and CCD at OLA. We always looked forward to seeng you in Chatham during our vacation. Mom & Dad always remembered you and enjoyed seeing you. Rest well my friend.

It was a pleasure working along side Joe for thirty years. He was a cop's cop, a true gentleman and a friend. My prayers are with his family and friends.

How sad to hear of Officer Fennell's passing. He was such a great man and always should the upmost respect for everyone. He was incredibly supportive of my family while we struggled with my son. I will be thinking of his family as they go through this difficult time.
