On June 21, 2021, John J. LaPoint, loving husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 97.

John was born on June 17, 1924, in Brockton, MA to the late Frederick and Theresa (Arnone) LaPoint.  He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Lillian M. (Tassinari) LaPoint and his children Susan Baker and her husband, Rick, of West Dennis, Joan LaPoint of San Francisco, CA, John LaPoint, Jr.and his wife, Gail Danelius, of Livermore, CA and Laura  Johnson and her husband, Eric, of East Dennis. He will be greatly missed by; his beloved grandchildren, Sarah Baker of Somerville, Catherine Baker and her fiance, Daniel Clark, of Cotuit, John LaPoint III of Livermore, CA, Molly LaPoint of Berkeley, CA, Margaret and Tyler Johnson of East Dennis.  In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his brother, Joseph LaPoint.

John graduated from Brockton High School in 1943. He was a World War II Army veteran serving with the Military Police in Europe.  After his discharge from the Army at the end of the war, John enrolled in the Massachusetts State Police Academy, graduating in 1952.  During his 22 years of service he was assigned as the State Police Aide to Lt. Governor Sumner Whittier in the 1950's and to Lt. Governor Elliot Richardson in the 1960's.  After his final assignment at the State House he was posted to the South Yarmouth Barracks as Commander.  He was promoted again to Staff Sargeant and served in the Middleboro and Norwell stations.  After his retirement from the State Police, John and Lillian relocated to Southern California and for the next 22 years they resided in Ventura, Aliso Viejo, Diamond Bar and Chino Hills. When Lillian was offered a position as Librarian at the Nathaniel E. Wixon Middle School in Dennis, they were very happy to return to the Cape.

John was a man of faith and service.  Throughout his life, he generously volunteered his time to church and community organizatons and he could always be counted on to help a friend or neighbor. John filled his life with the people and things that brought him joy.  He was proud of his famiy and any time spent with them was a cause for celebration. He loved poetry, literature, history, his garden, bird watching and the beach.  One of John's absolute greatest pleasures was music and he always had a song to fit any situation. (Often to the great annoyance of his children!)

It is said that life is what you make it and John LaPoint proved that to be very true.  He lived every day with an appreciation for the beauty of nature, the wonderful life he built with Lillian and the love of his family and friends.  Dad often told us "You shine a light in every dark corner." even when someone was just handing him a glass of orange juice. God Bless you Dad.  Your light will always shine bright in all of us.

John was interred at Chandler Gray Cemetery in West Yarmouth.  His family would like to thank all the wonderful people at the VNA Hospice of Cape Cod who cared for John in his final days.  Their amazing care and genuine compassion for all of us is deeply appreciated. Gifts in his memory may be made to giving@capecodhealthcare.org.(specify VNA Hospice of Cape Cod).
