Irvin Johnson, 64, passed away June 2, 2022 in Jacksonville, FL. He was born September 20, 1957 in Champaign-Urbana, IL to Leonard and Marion Johnson. He grew up in Upper Marlboro, MD before attending the University of Scranton to play basketball.  After college he lived in Philadelphia and then moved with his family to Massachusetts and eventually settled in Jacksonville, Florida.

Irvin is known by many for his basketball excellence while at the University of Scranton. He was the starting center in Scranton's first NCAA championship in 1976. During his time at Scranton, Irvin was a three-time All-American, earning first-team honors in 1977 and 1978, and third-team honors in 1980. He was a three-time NABC All-Middle Atlantic Region first-team honoree (1977, 1978, 1980), and a three-time MAC Northern Division first-team all-star (1977, 1978, 1980). In the Scranton Royals' record book, he ranks first all-time in rebounds, field goals made, and games played. He ranks second in field goal attempts and blocked shots in a single game, third all-time in scoring, and fourth in field goal percentage. Most recently he was named to the 2017 Class of the MAC Hall of Fame and honored as one of the top sports figures in the Middle Atlantic Conference.

Irvin’s athletic talents were rivaled only by his outsized personality. His laugh lit up every room and he brought joy to everyone he met. He loved all types of music and cheered on every sport. He spent his days fishing, gardening, and cooking for anyone who visited his home. He will be remembered as someone who shoveled snow from his neighbors’ driveways and delivered meals to nearby workers on holidays. He cherished his faith and most of all he loved his family and was so proud of them and supported them in all their endeavors
.
Irvin is survived by his best friend and wife of almost 33 years, Carol, daughter Deirdre, sister Valarie and many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom meant the world to him. He was predeceased by his parents Leonard and Marion and his brother Phil.
