Thomas Nicholas George passed away peacefully at his home where he had lived with his family in Yarmouth Port since 1974. He was 87 years old. Tom was predeceased by his parents Thomas Asaif George and Rose Abdow George.

Tom and his three siblings were raised in Worcester, MA. After the sudden death of his father at an early age, their tenacious single mother saw to it that their children went on to be well educated and seek a life beyond working at the family’s scrap yard. They were devoted parishioners at the St. George Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral.

On a full scholarship, Tom attended Worcester Academy and then went to UMass Amherst (Class of 1960) where he made life-long friends as a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity.

After graduation from college, he was an active-duty soldier in the US Army, serving as a tank officer at Ft. Hood in TX and overseas in Germany. He often boasted that he drank 21 cups of coffee on one particularly difficult day.

Tom was proud of his Lebanese heritage. It showed through with the countless Lebanese meals he cooked and shared with family and friends. He even wrote a Syrian Lebanese cookbook based on family recipes.

He began to form roots on Cape Cod during law school while he spent summers there working as a chef at Lobster in the Rough, The Hurricane Deck, and Gina’s by the Sea. One of these summer jobs provided him the opportunity to meet the love of his life, Alice McConathy of Newton, who was working as a waitress at The Hurricane Deck.

While working summers on the Cape, Tom saw there were significant opportunities there for young lawyers, so he moved to Yarmouth Port and married Alice in 1968. He then stayed happily married to her for fifty-seven glorious years.

On the Cape, Tom started a successful private law practice as well as bought and managed commercial real estate. In addition to being a lawyer and entrepreneur, Tom spent a great deal of time in public service. He served 35 years as Yarmouth’s Town Moderator and eight years as the State Representative for the 1st Barnstable District. Over the years, during the course of his civic and political life, he served on many community boards including the Boy Scouts of America, Cape Cod Museum of Art, Cape Cod YMCA, University of Massachusetts Alumni Association, Yarmouth Economic Development Council, Yarmouth Port Historical Society, and Yarmouth Zoning Board of Appeals. For decades he met on Fridays for lunch with friends at Jason’s Tavern in Dennis.

He enjoyed mentoring younger people as well as socializing with people from all walks of life. In addition to cooking, his hobbies included gardening, painting, and flower arranging. He was a phenomenal host, friend and most of all a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. Family trips visiting relatives in the Southwest USA, traveling abroad with Alice, long beach days at Sandy Neck, and catch-phrases like “The best dog is a hot dog” are a few among many fond memories of spending time with him.

Sadly, Tom was pre-deceased by his son Thomas Andrew, of Cummaquid, who passed in 2016 at the age of 44 from ALS. Tommy was married to Rebecca Brown George of Alameda, CA. He is survived by his wife, Alice (McConathy) George, and his children Alicia George Hutton of Waltham, MA and Christopher George of Yarmouth Port, and their spouses. His five granddaughters were the apples of his eye: Elise, Lila, Stella Maris, Guadalupe, and Paloma.

He is also survived by his siblings Marilyn George of Yarmouth Port, Edward George of Plymouth, MA and Patricia Doyle of Auburn, NH. He was cherished by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Honest lawyer. Honorable man. Respected colleague. Loyal husband and father. Leader by example. Whatever Tom did in life, personal or professional, he did to the full with dignity, grace and compassion. His legacy includes the race well run, proud Lebanese heritage, and name blemished.
