Peter Edward Canning of Brewster, MA passed away on Friday, October 17, 2025 at the age of 73.  Peter was born in Yarmouth, the son of Olive (Baker) and Robert Canning.  He was a longtime resident of Dennis.
 
After he graduated from Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School Peter set out to build a career around working with wood.  He built beautiful post and beam homes and barns.  He built fine shaker style furniture. He built custom cabinets. And he built beautiful Japanese-inspired unique pieces. Peter’s work can be found in private homes and public spaces throughout Cape Cod. Peter loved his workshop, his motorcycle and he could tell a great story.
 
Peter is survived by his son Josiah Canning and his wife Tyra, his daughter Jamin (Canning) Eldredge Egan and her husband John, and grandchildren: Shelby, Leah, Sam and Luke.  He is also survived by his former wife, Kim Holl and his longtime friend Deborah Reid Wickwire.
 
Peter’s celebration of life will be private.
 
 

Josie and Jamin I am so sorry for your loss. Peter was a great guy and a vital part of Scargo Pottery.The day they raised the barn is a day I will always remember fondly. What seemed important were family, friends and the integrity of his work.He was one of the finest finished carpenter's who's work stood on it's own. I remember him explaining how many layers of linseed oil and how many layers of fine sanding it took to create that absolute perfect finish that all his pieces obtained.Peter was Old School. I have a am glad he got a second chance at life after his stroke to spend that precious time with his beautiful grandchildren. Sam and Luke and Jamin's girls Shelby and Leah. Peter you will be surely missed.
