Michael L. McKimmey
Dec 31st, 2025
Michael L. McKimmey, age 84, died on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, due to cardiac arrest. Mike was born in Tulsa, OK, to Francis X. and Mary E. McKimmey, and was pre-deceased by his parents and siblings, Philip F. McKimmey and Mary E. McKimmey-Catalan. He was a long time resident of Wellesley, MA and Cape Cod, most recently residing in Yarmouth Port. He grew up in Kansas City, MO and was a member of the National Honor Society and a graduate of Rockhurst High School. After attending a year at Rockhurst University, he received a Congressional appointment to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY, from which he graduated in 1963 with a B.S. in Marine Engineering, a U.S. Coast Guard engineering license, and a commission as an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve.
After serving as an engineering officer in the Merchant Marine, Mike came ashore and was employed by the Worthington Corporation in Harrison, New Jersey. His engineering career over almost 50 years included Worthington, Burns and Roe, Chas. T. Main, Perini Corporation and finally the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from which he retired as Deputy Commissioner, Division of Capital Asset Management in 2011. From 1977 to 1979 he served as an Engineer in Residence, Engineering Societies Commission on Energy (ESCOE) in Washington D.C., as a consultant to the U.S. Department of Energy, providing his expertise in large utility power plants, gas turbine engines and combined cycle power plants. He was a registered Professional Engineer in several states and a Life Member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. An avid although average player, Mike loved the game of golf, particularly when playing with his golf buddies, Ned, Tom and John. His best times, however, were on the field with his three boys, coaching them for many years in soccer, baseball and basketball.
He met his wife and the love of his life, Deirdre (Didi), on a train between Washington D.C. and New York his senior year in college and they were wed in 1965. Together they raised their three beloved sons while living in New Jersey, Caracas, Venezuela, St. Croix, USVI, Potomac, MD and Wellesley, MA before moving to Cape Cod in 2003. He was a great fan of all New England sports teams and, of course, Kings Point football. A deeply intelligent man, his sharp mind was matched by a quietly spirited sense of humor. He leaves his loving wife of 60 years, Didi, sons, Michael L. Jr. (Sinéad Nicholas), Matthew (Brianne McDowell) and Christopher and his cherished granddaughter, Scarlett. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam [May his soul be at God’s right hand].
