Leona “Lee” Mae (Carr) O’Brien, 79, of South Dennis died peacefully on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at her home.
She was the wife of the late Austin B. O’Brien Jr.  Born in Middleboro, MA, Lee was the only child of the late Raymond and Barbara Carr.
Lee graduated from Middleboro High School in Middleboro, MA in 1961. After graduation, she worked as a beautician and then worked for her husband’s lumber business in sales and service until she finished her career doing what she ultimately loved the most, traveling the country as a flight attendant for Midway Airlines.
In 1965, Lee met her husband of 51 years Austin B. O’Brien Jr (OB). They were married in 1968 and settled in Yarmouth Port where they raised their children.
In 1980 Lee and OB built the house of their dreams on Bass River in South Dennis where they shared an amazing life and spent many days sitting on their deck enjoying the views of the river.
Lee had many loves and interests but what she loved most was her family and spending time with her grandchildren.  Over the years, she could always be found supporting them at their many athletic events, being their shoulder to lean on and teaching them how to love and cherish their family.
She was the rock and someone we all looked upon in times of need, direction, advice or a simple hug.  Her strength was unmatched and her willingness to step in and help anyone in need was never a question. Lee had no problem taking care of business and telling everyone exactly what they needed to hear whether they liked it or not.  Her love could never be questioned and she showed it in so many ways;  whether it was making her deviled eggs or homemade lemon meringue pie for the holidays which everyone loved, whispering kind words in your ear while she held you during a time of need, asking for a dance when she knew you didn’t want to or just giving you a wink from across the room.
She enjoyed so many things and there was no doubt she lived her life to its fullest.  One of her favorite things was to cruise alongside OB in their antique cars; the St. Patrick’s Day parade being her favorite.  She loved to travel and visited many places from Europe to Hawaii. And if you were lucky, you may have seen her driving her convertible BMW around town that she loved so much, listening to Lady Gaga or Sinatra while wearing her fur coat and her beautiful smile.
Her friends were many and the days having lunch and maybe a couple of wines, and sharing laughs were certainly not few.  She was the life of every party and left a lifetime impression on every person who had the chance to meet her.
Finally, Lee was a woman of faith and devoted her life to the catholic church and Saint Pius X of South Yarmouth.  She is back with the love of her life OB and will forever be our guardian angel, looking over her family and protecting us when in need.
Lee is survived by her daughter, Dawn-Marie Nardone and her husband, Michael of West Yarmouth, her son, Austin B. O’Brien III and his wife, Kathleen of Bourne and seven grandchildren, Ashley, Alex, Avery and Michael Nardone, and Austin, Jack and Kelley O’Brien as well as two great grandchildren, Michaela and Jacob and one more on the way.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 30, in Saint Pius X Church, Station Ave., South Yarmouth. Interment will be private.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Ryan Fiala Scholarship Fund, c/o Ian MacLeod, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, 101 Academy Drive, Buzzards Bay, MA 02532 or to the charity of one's choice.
