Following a life well lived and a hard- fought battle with metastasized pancreatic cancer, Retired Yarmouth Fire Chief, Charles Randall Sherman of West Yarmouth passed away at the age of 71 on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 in the arms of his loved ones.

“Randy” Sherman, born May 18, 1952 in Providence, RI to parents Robert W. Sherman and Lois (Randall) Sherman, both of Hyannis, MA, was raised on Cape Cod with a love of the ocean and a dedication to the service of others. Randall was a graduate of Dennis Yarmouth Regional High School and Anna Maria College and was a veteran of the United States Air Force, National Guard’s Fire Protection Unit, serving from 1972 until 1978 from Texas to Colorado and later Otis AFB (Joint Base Cape Cod).

Randall Sherman was predeceased by his mother at the age of 13 and by his father and step-mother, Priscilla (Gaffney) Sherman later in life, as well as his beloved wife of almost 50 years, Ruth (Dean) Sherman of Madison, ME in 2018.

He is survived by his son, Dean R. Sherman of Yarmouth Port, his daughter-in-law, Shannon, dearly loved grandchildren, Tucker and Teagan, his brother Rod W. Sherman of Dennis, MA, and sister Nancy Sherman (Daupheni Daniels) of Bountiful, UT.

Randy’s passing leaves many valued friends, closely held extended family members and cherished girlfriend of four years, Stephanie Orr.

Randy was a loving father and “Bumpa” to his grandkids and a lifelong fisherman, boater, and willing volunteer ready to help anyone in need at a moment’s notice.

Randy was always known for his dedication to the Yarmouth Fire Department and Fire Service as a Firefighter/EMT and Academy Instructor, rising through all the ranks of the YFD over 37 years of diligent service, retiring in 2008 as Chief.

He was also known for his over 30 years of tireless efforts on behalf of the Barnstable County Retirement Board and in the education of other boards across the state.  He was most recently held in high regard for his extensive efforts and dedication to the Cape Cod Salties, and for his love of Cape Cod, Maine, and the outdoors in general.

However, those who knew him best recall his immense warmth, work ethic, and his well-intentioned caring for others.

Chief Sherman will be laid to rest with a graveside ceremony on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at 11:00 am in Ancient Cemetery, Ancient Way, Yarmouth Port MA, 02675. All are welcome to attend and pay their respects to this remarkable man.

He is as loved as he is missed. We will carry him always in our hearts, bonded to him like the salt to the sea.

If the spirit of giving feels meaningful to you in this time of taking stock of the important things in life, his family asks that you direct your efforts to support the nonprofit work of the Cape Cod Salties' Foundation in his memory; an organization in which Randall believed greatly, assisted greatly, and in which found a true calling of restoring and protecting the fisheries and waterways which he held so dear.

Dean and family, So very sorry to hear you lost your dad. I know how sick he was and I m sure you find comfort in knowing he suffers no longer. However, he will be greatly missed by you and your family, as well as the many he knew and served so selflessly. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Barbara
