Elaine Fitzgerald of Yarmouth Port, MA, a longtime educator, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2024. Born in Boston on March 1, 1945 and raised in nearby Chelsea, Elaine spent many summers in Dennis Port before relocating to Cape Cod from Chelsea with her son, her mother, and her grandmother in the early 1970’s.
Elaine completed her teaching degree at Boston State College in 1970 and joined the staff of Nathaniel H. Wixon Middle School in South Dennis, MA in 1972 where she remained until retiring in 2003 to serve as the primary caregiver for her ailing mother. While gardening, cooking, and sewing (a side business) were favorite hobbies, her family, her faith, and her friends were her most cherished blessings. Elaine enjoyed her private time but was always ready for an outing: an evening listening to local musicians, a concert with the Cape Cod Symphony, seasonal performances at the Cape Playhouse, a day at the beach, a breakfast with colleagues, volunteering at the local food pantry, a quiet lunch with a good friend - all found a place in her busy life. Most special to Elaine were her two granddaughters, her niece, and her nephew. Elaine had a way of being “cool” without being condescending. Her greatest attribute was just being herself. For that, she will always hold a place in our hearts.
Elaine was predeceased by her mother Eleanor Stallsmith. She is survived by her son Richard Fitzgerald and his family; his wife Deborah Potee and their two children, Vivienne Potee and Juliette Potee, as well as her brother Joseph Stallsmith and his family; his wife Ingrid Stallsmith and their two children, Jonathan Stallsmith and Kristina Robb.
Elaine was a longtime communicant of Saint Pius X Church in South Yarmouth, MA. A funeral Mass in her honor will be held at Saint Pius X Church, Station Ave., South Yarmouth, MA at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 27, 2024. The Mass will be followed by a celebration of her life at the King’s Way Meeting House in Yarmouth Port, MA.
