Theresa Marie McElligatt
Jul 9th, 2024
Theresa Marie McElligatt, age 59, died on July 9, 2024. Theresa struggled with brain cancer (glioblastoma) for 17 months and passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones.
In high school Theresa met her soul mate and future husband, Patrick McElligatt. Their relationship blossomed from high school sweethearts to a loving partnership that lasted nearly forty-four-years, including a happy thirty-five-year marriage. Together they raised a family across six states, traveled the world, and created cherished memories. Their partnership included a thirty-year military career, with Patrick serving in the United States Coast Guard, and Theresa providing him with support and counsel, and making wherever they served home.
Theresa’s passion in life was her family, and her true calling was being a loving and devoted mother. She raised three amazing children, Donovan (age 31), Melina Vella (age 24) and Delaney (age 21). As a mother, she was a fierce advocate for her children and provided loving encouragement through their struggles and successes. She took great pride in seeing her children live the lessons of compassion, empathy, and service to others.
One of six children, Theresa was a voice of reason, confidant, and moral compass for her siblings. Most of all, she was a source of joy. She was the family’s host for the holidays, and travel agent for trips and vacations. The importance of family led her to constantly create opportunities to share the joy of family with her siblings.
The McElligatts lived in many places as a Coast Guard family, including Governors Island, NY; Deep River, CT; Waldorf, MD; Kodiak, AK; Honolulu, HI; and Seattle, WA. Theresa’s caring personality, bright spirit, and love of life led her to create many long-lasting friendships at every station.
Theresa could always be counted on to speak her mind, offering fresh perspective and giving honest advice whenever needed. She had an infectious laugh and a wry sense of humor. Her tender hugs always felt like they came from the bottom of her heart. We have lost a beautiful soul, and she will be missed every day by her family and friends.
Visiting hours will be held at Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave. South Yarmouth on Wednesday July 17th from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., followed by a graveside service at 5:00 p.m. at Woodside Cemetery in Yarmouth Port.
