John Preston Matthews age 66 of Hyannis passed away on March 8, 2026, at home. John was born in 1959 on Father’s Day in Dorchester, MA to Edgar J. Matthews and Lenore (Felton) Matthews. John was raised in West Yarmouth and attended school there.

John worked as a meat-cutter at BJ’s in Hyannis and sometimes part time as a driver for Ziggy’s. John was a caring person to his many friends on the Cape. He was the type of person to always show up no matter what. He had a dry sense of humor that often caught you a second too late, followed by that familiar half-smile. He enjoyed stirring the pot just enough to keep things interesting and was quite the prankster among those closest to him. His wit, loyalty, and steady presence will be deeply missed. He was passionate about Boxer dogs and loved his present dog Lucy and previous two Boxers Butkis and Milly. He enjoyed working on his truck with his friend William.

John is survived by his two step-brothers Roger of Nashua NH and Gerald of Bridgewater and several cousins. John is predeceased by his parents Edgar and Lenore and his favorite Aunt Charlotte of West Brookfield.

A memorial service will be held for family and visitors on Saturday, April 18, 2026,from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Boxer Charitable Foundation. John will be missed by his brothers, best friend William Baron and his family, his friends and co-workers in Hyannis.

John came off as kind of a curmudgeon when you first met him. He was certainly a "BJ's Character." When he came to the Optical Dept. to order his contacts, he would always have something to say about the price and delivery time! He could "needle" you with the best of them, but behind that facade was a heart of gold. John would do anything for you, give you the shirt off of his back! He said if I ever need a special cut of meat just ask and he would personally cut it for me. I took advantage of that offer many times over during my 11+ years at BJ's. It was so sad to hear of his untimely passing. I'll smile when I think of him. He will certainly be missed.
