Mary Frances “Fran” Warner Whitney, age 97, beloved wife, mother, grandma, aunt, sister and friend, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2026 with her three daughters watching over her in West Yarmouth, Massachusetts. Born in 1928 in Rye, New York, Fran was the middle daughter of Norman Gilbert Warner and Adelaide Stocking Milne Warner. After a childhood of sailing on Long Island Sound, including achieving the honor of Junior Commodore of the American Yacht Club at age 16, Fran moved to Vermont to live with her Aunt Celia and Uncle Sib in Green River in 1944. She attended the Stoneleigh Prospect Hill School (now the Stoneleigh Burnham School) in Greenfield, MA. She graduated and then attended Colby College in Waterville, Maine, until becoming engaged to the love of her life, Edward Whitney. When Ed graduated and entered officer training with the U.S. Army, Fran transferred to Lasalle Jr. College to earn her Associate of Science degree as a Medical Secretary.

Fran married Ed in Ivoryton, Connecticut on June 21, 1952. They first met while skiing and ballroom dancing at Colby. While honeymooning together for two years in New York City, Fran worked in a Dr.’s office with some entertaining patients, (including Patti Paige and Mel Brooks!) while Ed served in the Central Intelligence Corps. At the Korean War’s end, they settled in Westwood, MA, and then Needham, MA, where they raised their three daughters. They celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary before Ed passed away in 2014.

Fran made it her mission to raise independent, educated, and confident girls. By example, she taught them to cook and bake, garden, manage household finances, sew, and entertain. All of those skills she learned from her Aunt Celia on the farm. Our family home was a revolving door of family and friends visiting for meals, parties, and celebrations, Fran always cooking from scratch and decorating with fresh flowers, linens and candles. Ever resourceful, she made her own Christmas wreaths, window draperies, patchwork quilts, and hand-knitted sweaters. She sewed her own wedding gown, bridesmaid and formal dresses, and many a party dress for her daughters. It was on the farm that she first learned to grow and arrange fresh flowers, which became a life-long passion. Even at age 96 she could be found making flower arrangements to brighten the tables at her assisted living residence.

Fran was a volunteer at the Congregational Church in Needham, MA, and a leader of the Needham Garden Club and later the Garden Club of Yarmouth. She and Ed danced together for decades and attended countless big-band and jazz concerts with friends. In the 70’s and early 80’s, she worked as a medical secretary at Wellesley College to help pay for her daughters’ college tuitions and loved “mothering” the students who ventured into the infirmary. Fran and Ed moved to Yarmouth Port on Cape Cod in the mid 80’s and enjoyed more than 25 healthy years of retirement together. Fran played tennis until the age of 80, but by far her favorite pastimes were sailing and swimming in the salt waters of Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket Sound. Her last ocean swim was at age 96, with a huge grin on her face.

Her family brought her great joy, and hardly a day passed when Fran did not tell her children and grandchildren how lucky she was to have them. Fran is survived by her daughters Susan Traynor (Patrick) of Marshfield, MA; Linda Conti (Domenico) of South Yarmouth, MA; and Carolyn Bosserman (James) of Scottsdale, AZ and Dennis, MA; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Fran is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Fran was predeceased by her beloved husband Ed, and her sisters Barbara Maslen and Adelaide Minott. We want to extend our gratitude for the exceptional care Mom received from Maplewood Assisted Living and the wonderful, caring nurses and doctors at Cape Cod Hospital.

A celebration of her life will be held at The Cultural Center of Cape Cod, 307 Old Main Street, South Yarmouth, on Saturday, June 13, 2026 at 11:00 AM. Family and friends are kindly invited to attend the ceremony and lunch. Please RSVP to Carolyn at MFWWCelebration@gmail.com by May 28.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests charitable donations in Fran’s memory be made to the Green River Village Preservation Trust, â„… Lynn Pancake, 1082 Green River Rd., Guilford, VT 05301.
